Wildly fluctuating O2 levels
I’m experiencing wildly fluctuating o2 levels on finger oximeter. This morning already I’ve been everywhere from 71 to 99, especially while standing still.
I went to the ER June 3 with this and they couldn’t find anything. My pft of June 3 indicated restrictive lung disease. May or may not be due to Amiodarone.
I’m going to Mayo July 27 to see a pulmonologist.
Very scary and depressing.
I know if I go back to the ER they probably won’t find anything, and I read in my medical records that my pcp has diagnosed hypochondriasis(not the case, this is really happening).
Anyone else have this?

You could buy an oxygen concentrator on Amazon. You don't need a prescription if you buy it.
OMG! WHERE do you live? Couldn't you have gone to another hospital?
I blew a clot into my lung from a dvt in February. I went to the "famous" Cleveland Clinic (BAD choice). I was feeling short of breath on exertion (more than usual) and feeling faint and just weird! They gave me a CAT scan, took blood, some rude respiratory guy came in, slapped a mask over my mouth spouting crap about copd and wasting his time. Of course they admitted me (they admit EVERYONE). I got to the ward, and I had a iv in my left arm (right on the crease) and an iv catheter in my right arm. I am heavy (keep that tid bit in mind). Everything was fine, I was breathing fine. I actually managed to fall asleep (after a couple nights of no sleep) curled up on my left side. Suddenly Broomzilda flew in and slapped a blood pressure cuff right on top of my iv in my left arm! She was yelling about something, the pain was atrocious! She was saying something about having copd caused by being obese and having sleep apnea on top of that. I was trying to get the blood pressure cuff off of the iv. Horrible night! They put on my chart every horrible possible guess they could think of. Congestive heart failure, collapsed lung (I was NOT even in the ICU!), and on and on. I eventually was released after they told me that everything was caused by being obese. I left with O2 also.
I have seen a hematologist, a pulmonologist, a cardiologist and all have "no idea" why I am still on O2 or when it will stop.
I am beyond frustrated and aggravated I can't even have a diagnosis besides blaming it on being obese. And that is the Cleveland Clinic.
Hi
Kudzu/Phoenix here.
I was inactive on this website for two years and recently got back on.
I went to Mayo Clinic; was told that I did not have restrictive lung disease and they couldn’t find anything wrong with my o2.
I have adopted a “scr** it” attitudes d never check my o2 levels.
If I can backpack and do strenuous exercise in the gym there can’t be too much wrong.
Thanks to all of you who showed concern to me; I hope that you’re all ok.
Drs best guess with me is its circulation in my fingertips.
Best to all of you, and please be your own advocates.
I am on oxygen and my level changes according to weather.
Hope that helps
Please do NOT buy a portable O2 concentrator from Amazon. The machines they sell are NOT approved and have not been tested for reliability and medical use. When UCLA bought several to test, they found them producing much less than promised.
Reliable vendors can be found by asking your lung doc’s office. They require a prescription as it is a medical device.
Did you ever find anything out? I have been having similar issues. Fluctuating 80-99 every six minutes. Was hospitalized and put on oxygen 24/7. Over the past yr heart has been checked lungs checked...all seems good. Weirdly enough, talking seems to affect me the most. O2 drops to low 80's and heart rate will spike over 120 if I have normal conversation.
Same issues while traveling by car. Fluctuating even on oxygen but not as hard/fast.
I have an o2 ring. Shows the cycle of o2 fluctuations from 80-99 in pretty consistent 6 min cycles. Wearing my body out. Even during oxygen therapy the fluctuation occur but I can move more and do things longer without very low dips (below 80). My drs...dont even want to look at results from anything that is not done in office. I was lucky the first time I was seen that my o2 was fluctuating in the low 80's at the time they checked . The doctors just keep saying it doesn't make sense. Failed the 6 min walk but my pulm says my lungs are fine.
Hi Joky;
I wish I had answers for you, but I have only questions.
What kind of testing did they do? Anything under stress like a 6 minute walk test or a stress test?
I’ve read that it’s normal to have o2 levels drop while talking, but I don’t know by how much. The heart spike is interesting; it makes sense that hr would increase if o2 levels dropped since the heart would be trying to pump oxygen rich blood around the body, but 120? I don’t know.
The car situation I don’t know either, unless there just wasn’t enough fresh air coming in. Plus, you were sitting still.
Have they checked you for something like POTS or dysautonomia? Not sure why, but that comes to mind. Maybe the heart spikes while talking and maybe sitting still, and while sitting still in a car. I don’t have pots, but I’ve read it can happen while sitting upright.
I’m no dr, just telling you what occurs to me.
I could be completely off base, but maybe this helps.
I just read the post to drwass3; it just popped up on my screen. It answers my question about the 6 min test.
I can only suggest getting a second opinion.
PS; I did go to Mayo for a pulmonologist consult and was told if there were anything serious wrong with my lungs I wouldn’t be able to get my levels up to 99%.
I also did a VO2 max test at Mayo that turned out well.
So, I don’t have any answers about my levels; they just keep saying they can’t be accurate.
I was inactive on the website for 2 years and now I see a lot of people had the same experience. Don’t know.
