MAC again
It's 7 years since I finished the MAC cocktail and it seems the MAC has returned. Is it too soon to go back on that cocktail? I was very sick with it at that time and don't know if I can survive another 18 months. Are there any other options?

Seeing the ID doc on April 22. Haven't seen the results of the susceptibility tests, so I guess he will come up with a treatment plan based on those. The long waits are hard, aren't they. Hope you don't have more exacerbations in the meantime. The people in this group are a strong and brave bunch and very inspiring.
Hi can you elaborate on rifampicin affecting the bladder please. Since starting on the big 3 3 months ago I am having some urinary incontinence. Dr says not from drugs!!!!!
Hi, you did well to go 7 years free of MAC. Sorry that it has come back again. I am just starting on the big 3, three months in. My train of thought is I won’t do the medication again if it comes back and most people seem to get it back within one year if I last another seven years I doubt I’ll do medication again but I’m 67 so seven more years might be okay I have my fingers crossed, but it does not come back in one year after. I can’t believe people do this for three years and then it still comes back. We really need a lot more research into NTM and more solutions in this day and age. You think they’d be something simple to kill this bug if you are doing treatment again airway clearance apparently and probiotics might help with your side-effects. Good luck.
I started to get what I thought were UTIs but every test I had came back negative. I had to get up at least 5 times every night to empty my bladder. It was interesting when I took the rifanpicin it took about 2 hours for my urine to turn orange. There are studies to suggest that rifanpicin is not needed in the regimen. My bloods showed that my kidney function had deteriorated too. Since stopping the big 3 I have had to take Vesicare for bladder irritation. Annoying as those tablets cause dry mouth but I no longer have the urgency to go to the loo. It is worth doing lots of research about the side effects associated with these antibiotics. I wish you luck and hope you continue to do well on the meds.
Thanks for the reply. Were you having this problem from the get go or after long term use?
Do you have to take the one for bladder irritation all the time now?
My urine turns orange very quickly too I try to drink lots of water throughout the day to wash it through quickly. Best regards and good luck to you, hope it never comes back!
Hi there, yes the bladder irritation started within the first month of treatment. Drinking lots of water is crucial. I am on the one bladder tablet and will probably have to continue taking them. Looking back I wish I started the meds in a different way. Many people are advised to start off with one antibiotic for 2 weeks, add the next and so on then it is easier to work out which one is causing side effects. Some people are lucky and they are able to tolerate the big 3. Life is a challenge when taking these tablets. Hope you can eat as food helps with absorption. Good luck!
Hi Sue, just wondering if it is safe for me to get my Covid booster later today.i am growing abcsessus and avium at the moment but I am not on treatment. I am coughinh up sputum which is slightly green but I have no fever. I asked my GP and they said to ask the pharmacist who is giving me the jab. I am quite anxious about this. Any advice? Thanks
Like many others here, I have consistently gotten my immunizations through the time I had MAC, because I want to eliminate or reduce as many other risks of illness as I reasonably can. My docs were fully in agreement with this.
@scoop, @pacathy, @becleartoday and others, what have you done?
Did you ask your pulmonologist or ID doc?
Yes, I’ve always gotten vaccines. It’s my understanding that unless otherwise indicated, it is recommended to get vaccines, including flu and pneumococcal.
Warm regards, Linda Esposito
Thank you I did. I was lucky and I heard back from my ID doc. Great to hear it from others too. Hopefully I will feel ok now that I have had it.
