Anyone Taking Mirtazapine for Sleep?

Posted by dfb @dfb, Jan 24, 2024

I've recently titrated off of 450mg of Venlafaxine that I had been on for fifteen years. While I was on it I would wake up every two hours until they put me on 150mg of Seroquel, but that makes me depressed and groggy, so I no longer take that.

Even though I am no longer on Venlafaxine I still wake up every two hours. I believe, and I think my provider now agrees, that the sleep disturbances are at least contributing to my depression and anxiety, if not the cause.

Soooo, my primary care provider has ordered a sleep study that I don't suspect will find anything. And my psych provider has just prescribed Mirtazapine. I of course have looked it up but I'm interested in any first hand experiences with the drug.

Does it help you sleep through the night?
Where you able to stop taking it?
How bad where the side effects?

Thank you for any information you can provide.

May you live in peace and good health.

I've just started taking 15mg at night for sleep about a week ago. So far I have not experienced any improvement in my sleep patterns. I am, however hungry all the time.

I've recently lost thirty five pounds and need to lose another twenty five to reach a healthy weight. I can not afford to gain weight as I believe the excess weight is a significant contributor to my depression.

I am so tired of side effects from medication and the providers who dismiss them.

I do not believe I can achieve good mental health if my physical health is a mess. The body and the mind are one integrated system.

Yeah, I'm frustrated.

I completely understand and am in a similar situation. These health issues are so debilitating and frankly devastating for any kind of normal life.

Mitazipan only gave me 4/5 hrs sleep and seemed to cause more anxiety.

I recently started taking 15 mg. and still can not sleep. I don't even get tired during the day. It's been at least a month and I lay awake all night. I took xanex for years for anxiety and then I found I didn't need it for much anxiety but found I slept well with it. The doctor won't give it to me for sleep so put me on Trazodone and now this. Trazodone made me sick and Mirtazapine doen't do any thing but tmake me dizzy when I get up. I really tired of playing games with medications. I do not want to gain weight because I struggle getting it off.

Either Mitazapine or Lexapro have given me tinnitus. Same experience?

Hi, I started taking Mirtazapine around 15 years ago. First at 30 mg per night and that put me out like a light. But after a year or so, my psychiatrist started lowering the dose. I had years of either sleeping well or not at all. My best sleep came back at 7.5 mg. There's a lot of research that says Mirtazapine works best for sleep at lower doses. Right now I'm down to 3.75 or half of the 7.5 mg pill. I take 2 mg of Melatonin with it and my sleep is great. Plus I lost all the excess weight I put on while taking Mirtazapine.
Trazadone didn't work for me at all.
I do take Lexapro also. Best of luck

In what way did trazodone make you sick? I've been taking it for years and I take mirtazapine at 15 mg as that dose is supposed to stimulate my appetite.

I got up slowly to go to the bathroom and got dizzy and nauseous. I thought I was going to throw up so laid back in bed until symptoms subsided.

It’s only a week on it and last night was my first sleep. It was a broken up sleep but after not sleeping over two weeks it was a gift. I hope it continues. I have suffered from insomnia since 2007 and anxiety too which alaprazleom really helped me sleep but my doctor won’t give it to me anymore .

Thank you. One of these drugs has given me tinnitus. I have committed to taking them thru 4/22. We’ll see. Heard the same thing about 7.5 mirtazapine.

I never had any issue with tinnitus on either. Hope that resolves for you.
