My alcohol septal ablation

Posted by trammell1918 @trammell1918, Mar 24 11:28am

Six days ago, I had a successful alcohol septal ablation at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville. I am 86 years old and was told I was too old so I went to Mayo for a second opinion. In 2 months I will have my aortic valve replaced with the TAVR procedure.
The alcohol septal ablation was painless. They gave me medication to relax me, but I was awake during the process. Our blood vessels do not have pain receptors. It was a two hour process. I spent 3 nights in the hospital wearing a portable pacemaker in case it was needed, which it wasn’t. I might’ve gone home earlier, but I developed flu A! So my cardiologist became a flu doctor as well.
Please go for second opinions. I almost didn’t do it. Send me your questions. Lynne

So glad your alcohol septal ablation went well. I too had an alcohol septal ablation at Mayo in Rochester.
Keep Going!!

Really glad it worked out getting that second opinion! My local cardiologist wanted to do septal ablation said it was best course for me!
I have thru my insurance a program called 2nd MD
Where they link you with a specialist.
While waiting on that second opinion opointment my wife talked me into going to mayo
Mayo diagnosed me with HCM with severe LVOTO and said septal myectomy would be better served for me because i was 56 and do a lot of intense bicycling. They said alcohol ablation would be suited if i wasnt in good ahape and in my 70’s or older!
Had my second opinion with 2nd MD and they echoed mayo
So glad i did!
They have me on camzyos to help get me stronger before my myectomy in June
Camzyos has been a miracle drug for me since having my exercise induced heart failure!
Thank You Mayo and thank you camzyos!
And a big thank you to my wife who had the sense enough to encourage me to get that 2nd opinion!

Great news Lynn. May I ask how thick your septum was? My septum is 19mm. I’ve been on Camzyos for 9 months with little relief. I will be discussing other options and my preference is procedure you had. Some say my septum isn’t thick enough but I am very fatigued.

Hi,
I hope I’m telling you the right thing. The report said my basal septum was 15–16 mm. My case is complicated by the fact that I had to have the alcohol ablation before I could have TAVR Procedure done which will happen sometime in May. My symptoms are shortness of breath, and fatigue Which I hope will get much better after I have the TAVR
Best wishes to you
