My burning mouth was finally diagnosed as acid reflux with Barrett’s. In reading today I read about the connection between fatty liver and acid reflux so indirectly fatty liver can cause the reflux that can cause the burning mouth!

I have also started acupuncture for BMS and have brought this same study to my acupuncturist. I am also considering checking into a few others. I will say, it's only been 3 weeks and I do feel like I have seen improvement. How long overall would you say it took you to receive significant improvement? I'm curious - did they give you herbs to use or just the treatment? And, do you go back for periodic treatments? If so, how often do you return? I agree - those fingernail points that were just added do hurt but if it's helping I'm all for it!

I have not had to go back since the second round of treatments. As I mentioned, I still occasionally feel it to a minor degree, but it's not often, prolonged, or bad. The first time was maybe 10-12 treatments over 3+ months, and the second was maybe half that. It's been several years, so timelines aren't clear anymore. No herbs, no moxa, just needles. I know that not everything works for everybody, but this worked for me. I hope it does for you, 'cause that BMS can be a real bitch!

Has anyone noticed that the burning mouth syndrome gets worse with cold weather versus warmer weather? Just today, after having a cold snap for a few days my burning mouth syndrome came back with a vengeance. Stu.

Funny you mention that. I was just in FL for a few days and visited my Mom and thought my BMS was really much better and than came back here and noticed it seemed to ramp back up again (here being Wisconsin where it's snowing and cold)

I am 53 and I have had burning mouth for about a year now. I have been to dentists, pychiatrist, family doctor and everyone of the docs tell me to see another doc it is so frustrating ... I am bipolar and take meds for it but this is a very depressing ailment in itself. All the docs look at you and don't know what you are talking about, so I do my own researching all the time and I found this site....if anyone has found something that helps PLEASE let me know.

I an 74 and have had this problem off and on for several years. It comes an goes. 2 years ago the Dermatologist ordered "magic mouthwash" . The formula is on the internet. It is mainly an antacid, a decongestant, and lidocaine. It does not cure but it is major relief. You swish and spit several times a day. It stopped the pain and burning so I could eat. This is what is in it. “Magic Mouthwash” Combine equal parts: -liquid diphenhydramine hydrochloride (Benadryl) -aluminum hydroxide/magnesium hydroxide (Maalox; do NOT use Kaopectate) Shake/combine well and swish/gargle with 5-10mL, then spit, every 4-6 hours. Wait 30 mins before eating or drinking." It is only for 10 days. Like I said it is not a cure. When I used it last time the problem went away. Now its back. My current doctor never heard of it. But she did order it for me and it has helped so I can eat. This time it didn't go away. I see her next month to try an figure it out. It least this is a good temporary fix. My insurance did not cover the prescription, but it was only around $14 at Walgreens. Hope this helps you

Does anyone use medical marijuana for Sjögrens? I see in Illinois it is one of the conditions listed for which medical marijuana can be prescribed.

If you can’t get medical marijuana, try Delta 8 It is a very close cousin to the real thing. Marijuana is actually Delta 9. The difference between Delta 8 and Delta 9 is one molecule and the fact that Delta 8 is legal. You will get very similar results from Delta 8 (to tell the truth you can’t tell the difference, unless you are a real marijuana connoisseur). You can order it online or go to local smoke shops to procure Delta 8. I use it for my migraines and it helps me tremendously!

I would consider taking a look at your diet and try to go for foods that are less acidic and more alkaline. That might help.

I too suffered with burning mouth several years. A smart PA at emergency room had my burning stopped within an hour with a recommendation for an esophagus scope which I got. Diagnosed with gastritis w hypetplasia, reflux, and Barrett’s. Treatment with ppi and sucralfate liquid for a month and the burning started decreasing. After 2 months able to stop pain pills. After 5 months I have had to switch ppi’s couple of times. Notice if I take a steroid or antibiotic for infection in other areas that will cause some burning in mouth so must irritate my esophagus. I do dissolve pepsid complete in my mouth couple of times a day if I have break thru burning in mouth. I do all the other recommendations on line for reflux, wedge pillow to raise upper body, eat small low fat to fat free meals, deleted fatty foods, don’t eat after 4 etc. Main thing is patience. Took a good month to get the slightest improvement then pretty quickly improved more. I recommend anyone with burning mouth get your esophagus scope from specialist.

Have you tried a rinse called “Magic Mouth” ? It numbs your mouth for it has lidocaine in it. However it give instant relief and lasts about an hour and a half. I have to have a compounding pharmacy make it for me. Roland’s also off temporary relief but only for a few minutes… good luck.

Please speak to your dentist. I have an allergic reaction, where my mouth
burns when using regular tooth pasts. Finally spoke to my dentist and she
recomended Sensodyne Pro-Namel Active Shield. Works great but don't buy
just any Sensodyne product it has to be exactly as I stated above. Sometimes
hard to find but I get it from Amazon. Also there might be an alergic reaction
to one of your meds. I suggest you google the side effects of each of them.
Hope this helps
