On Trazodone but still not sleeping well.
I've been this way my entire life. I am so jealous of my dog. She hits her bed and five minutes later is sound asleep, while I'm tossing and turning for an hour or more. I took Ambien for awhile but the bad side effects caught up with me. Now I'm using Melatonin and didn't find it helpful at first, but after about a week it's finally started working.
I have extreme insomnia due to unchecked anxiety. My body cannot tolerate the “popular” anxiety meds like Lexipro, Celexa, Effexor, etc. Ativan, Xanax, Ambien have all been prescribed but they lost their effectiveness due to the length of time I was on them. I get 0 hours sleep. In a last ditch effort, I was prescribed Seroquel which is an antipsychotic (I do not have psychosis or schizophrenia). Doctor denied this medication was an antipsychotic. After one pill at night, I was falling over and could not walk the next morning. Another medication goes to be destroyed after trying one pill. Very distressing situation.
I have been on Zolpidem ER for quite some time and it seems it's been losing its affect by itself. I have added a non-prescription chewable ZZQuill tablet with my Zolpidem. I fall asleep again within 5 minutes, but still I can only get a maximum of 6.0 hours uninterrupted sleep. I suggest you check with your GP before trying.
My best.
Don't feel like the lone ranger. Lots of people have the same problem, I am one of them. Iam thinking of acupuncture to heal this problem; but it is not covered by bluecross. check into it my friend and good luck.

2 ReactionsI have trouble falling asleep. I don't watch television or look at my phone or computer prior to going to bed. I have tried Zolpidem, Trazadone and Mertazapine. All three do not put me to sleep, but instead I toss and turn for hours, I get restless legs and terrible dry mouth. These medications do the exact opposite of what I need. Does anyone else have this problem? What can I try?

1 ReactionHave you gone to a sleep specialist to try different treatments, maybe therapy like hypnosis or CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy)? Have you tried zopiclone, Ambien, https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/what-is-the-best-prescription-medication-for-sleep ?

1 ReactionYou know what? "Misery loves company" is one of my sister sayings!
OK. Lots of us have sleep problems.
I do. I am sorry you do too. Here is my deal...I can, only at times, with drugs, sleep about 4.5 hours. That is all. Maybe, better than you it seems? I know why, but I have tried for 20 years to reverse it, but "NO GO".
Here is what happened TO ME...My OBGYN Doctor put me on a drug when I was in the "change of life" to help me sleep. OK. It worked. The next few years, I asked and asked, year after year if I could stop the medication? He got angry, and said, "My wife takes it, isn't that good enough for YOU?" (geez)
Finally after the 15 years, he called me and actually said that there was "new information" out, and I should stop the drug. So then, when I finally did stop, so did my falling asleep!! After that, I did a "Sleep Study", ALL kinds of everything under the sun to try to sleep without a pill. YEARS of that!! No luck, 25 years later, still big problem going to sleep. Absolutely NO sleep without an aid of some kind!!
Sorry you have that situation as well. We know we are not alone. This site proves it!! I really do understand!!
Thanks to my Doctor for not knowing what he advises. I did not hear an "I'm sorry!" from him. At least he called with new information. Maybe his wife divorced him?
Best for a Doc to say, " I do NOT know". He sounded so ABSOLUTE!
I feel your pain!!
Maybe something new will be found!!
Best Wishes!!
I am a 71 year old female and have had horrible insomnia for 5 years. Before that happened, I was taking low dose Trazodone only because I worked 3 different shifts and could not get to sleep fast enough. Otherwise, my sleep was normal. However, after about 4 years the Trazodone stopped working at any dose and I could no longer sleep on my own. Have you tried Belsomra or Gabapentin? Belsomra is expensive unless you have good insurance. I just started Gabapentin 200-300 mg at night an hour before bed and it does give me 8 hours of sleep but I do feel groggy for several hours in the morning. Gabapentin is also prescribed for neuropathy, restless legs, pain and anxiety. It’s also a very inexpensive medication. If you are a female, you might have your hormones checked especially if you are at menopause. On the supplement side, melatonin often helps some people but gave me nightmares. Some people are sensitive to caffeine and can’t drink it past morning as it’s effects can last 8 hours. Same with high carbohydrate meals and sugar at night. Cognitive Behavior Therapy is supposed to be very helpful if you have access to it in your area. Hope this helps.
