I am being treated for GERD with 3 different medications. I also have BMS and since my GERD symptoms have not improved, I am wondering if in fact my symptoms are all related to BMS. Does anyone else have burning of the tongue, roof of mouth, extended to the throat and sternum region?

After suffering with burning mouth, burning tongue, burning tooth, metal taste, I had an esophagus scope and I was finally diagnosed with reflux and Barrett’s. First I will tell you it isn’t instant relief with treatment but yes treatment for reflux can relieve Burning mouth, etc. I was prescribed 40 mg of a ppi twice daily. I started with pantapazole ppi ( had swelling in ankles and feet so changed to Prilosec. Prilosec OTC 40 MGB twice daily, proscription for sucralfate liquid 10ml 30 minutes before meals and before bedtime. Baclofen 5mg 4 times daily last dose at bedtime 30 minutes before taking last dose of sucralfate. At first I woke up in middle of night with burning so I washed my mouth out, took a drink of water, and then took an extra dose of sucralfate liquid. I began to notice after a couple of weeks the sucralfate dose I took in middle of night slightly helped my burning. After 30 days I began to notice a little less burning. At 60 days of treatment I was having many periods during the day without burning which was wonderful and continued to improve the burning. I developed a cough and nasal drainage and switched from Prilosec to Nexium OTC 40 mg twice daily. No coughing. Nexium seemed to work even better than Prilosec. I am 4 months out now and it’s unbelievable how much better I am regarding burning. I use the sucralfate before I go to bed. I use 5 mg baclofen 4 times a day. I take Nexium 20 mg twice daily-first thing in morning and an hour or so before bed and two hours after any food. I only drink water sometimes heated up in microwave. I follow all the guidelines for living with reflux. I have the raised slanted foam pillow on my bed that lefts up my upper body or you could raise head of your bed 6 inches. I don’t eat late meal. I only eat light meals. I stay away from fatty foods. If the burning breaks thru during the day I take a pepsid complete chewable. I had no idea I had reflux as I never felt anything come up my esophagus or into my throat. I was told reflux can be silent. I know what it feels like to have a hot burning mouth and it hurts. I encourage you to visit with your doctor. My doctor had no hope that reflux treatment would stop my burning but he was wrong. He is thrilled I am feeling better. In the beginning I did go to the energy room and the PA ended my burning before I left there. It was wonderful my body was so peaceful. She recommended the upper esophagus scope but I did not immediately have that done because I did not think I had reflux. I was wrong. I think coating the esophagus with the sucralfate liquid is beneficial but like I said….it takes a good 30 days at least for me to start getting relief. Now I smile more. My body is relaxed not putting up with so much hot mouth burning. Good luck!

I’ve had BMS for over 17 years. Over time it has lessened because I’ve learned to deal with it. But there are days when it’s so bad that I feel like hitting my head against the wall. There are a couple of good groups on Facebook that give a lot of help and suggestions.

I suffered with the burning mouth and after almost 3.5 years a smart PA at emergency room recommended I get an esophagus scope which I did. Diagnosis was silent reflux and Barrett’s. Serious treatment for reflux with ppi 40 mg twice daily, sucralfate liquid 4 times daily ( 30 minutes before meals and bedtime) and baclofen 5mg 4 times daily. Following all reflux recommendations for living and eating on line and only drink water. Upper body elevated at night. Progress was not quick. I could begin to see a little less burning at 30 days. After 60 days got off the pain pills and pregabalin had taken for burning mouth. I am a little over 4 months out. When I had a little burn break thru during day I take pepsid complete chewable which works quickly to reduce burning. Now I am taking Nexium 20 mg twice daily, sucralfate liquid at night 10 ml, and baclofen 5mg 4 times daily last dose at bedtime. With the Barrett’s I most likely will have to continue reflux treatment but thank goodness I go without burning for many hours before a slight burn shows up. Next best thing besides stopping the burning is how relaxed my body is. Can’t stress enough how reflux treatment takes time to see results at least for me.

What 3 medications are you being treated with and dosage? I am treating for reflux and Barrett’s with medical supervision because I have burning mouth, tongue, and tooth. Reflux treatment was the answer for me!

Yes! And I have talked to many doctors who have been part of my base of tongue cancer treatments over the last 4 years. None have had any experience with BMS and no one has a cure or effective treatment. I’m on pain medication to help me manage through the day. And that’s all it does it gives me an opportunity to get out of bed. But most days the pain is so bad I want to crawl into bed and never come out. All I drink is water. Foods are bland. It interrupts my food intake and overall quality of life. How can we not have any doctors anywhere in the world that can effectively treat this.

Those of you who say you get used to it must not have it as severe as I do. I can never get used to this.

I’m sorry I don’t have any solutions for you other than to say I empathize.

I am sorry! I suffered for almost 4 years with burning mouth, tongue, and tooth. I got allergy test for dental allergies. I replaced 3 crowns 3 times. I got a root canal and then pulled the tooth all in an effort to get rid of the hot burning in my mouth. Finally a PA in emergency room suggested I get an esophagus scope which I did. I was diagnosed with reflux and Barrett’s. My reflux was silent. Serious treatment for reflux has given me almost complete burning relief. I have many many hours with no burning at all and it’s wonderful!!! My body is relaxed!!! I was totally shocked that my burning was caused by reflux and Barrett’s.

@lauren123 Thanks so much for your info on the type of laser you have. I will let you know how I make out once I start on the MLS laser therapy I mentioned.
Are you still using your laser every day?

This is an older post but curious is you had success with laser therapy?? Where did you have it done?

I have had this mouth problem for at least a month. Went to an eye, ear and throat doctor and he saw nothing unusual and he recommended a mouthwash. Didn’t help. It comes and goes so I’m still trying to find a cause.

That’s what my eye, ear, nose doctor said to me to when I went to him with burning mouth. I am having success with reflux treatment. I was just finally diagnosed with reflux ( silent) and Barrett’s. Taking 40 mg Nexium twice daily and taking sucralfate liquid 3 times a day 30 minutes before meals and bedtime. I also take baclofen 5 mg 3 times during day and at bedtime. I take pepsid complete chewable if burning breaks thru during day. Took a good 30 days to see any improvement. After 60 days I was able to stop pain pills and pregabalin. I feel so much better and getting the burning to stop really relaxes my body. I suffered with burning mouth, tongue, and tooth 3 plus years.

When I was deep into BMS a couple of years ago, I was about to start acupuncture for a different malady. My wife asked if acupuncture might make the BMS worse, so I researched it and found a medical study that showed that a particular type of acupuncture was actually beneficial. I printed the study, took it to the acupuncturist, and he followed the procedures outlined. My BMS subsided by 80 percent within three months of treatments. There were times when there were no symptoms at all. It returned to a lesser degree about six months later, so I went back and had a few more treatments. It’s been almost a year and I would say that I feel nothing 90 percent of the time and just slightly noticeable the rest. I’m VERY happy I found the research and had the protocol. I can only verify that it worked for me, and it may for you. Best of all, it has not side effects. Here is a link to the study, which I downloaded and took to my acupuncturist.

Over time, he added some more points beyond what was called for in the study. I think two in particular added a lot. I don’t know what they are called in acupuncture vernacular, but they were next to the fingernail on the fourth and fifth finger. Those, unlike the others, did hurt, but I think made a lot of difference.

I have also started acupuncture for BMS and have brought this same study to my acupuncturist. I am also considering checking into a few others. I will say, it's only been 3 weeks and I do feel like I have seen improvement. How long overall would you say it took you to receive significant improvement? I'm curious - did they give you herbs to use or just the treatment? And, do you go back for periodic treatments? If so, how often do you return? I agree - those fingernail points that were just added do hurt but if it's helping I'm all for it!
