Anyone experience morning anxiety / depression?

Posted by applepie @applepie, Jan 25, 2025

My particular thing.... I feel anxious but ok when I wake. Then will peak along with depression mid morning, then Wayne off and will feel better.

Anyone dealt with a similar pattern and if so how did u manage it?

@applepie Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! While we wait for others to give us their experiences, let me give you some thoughts.

Are you taking any medications? If so, does the depression and anxiety coordinate with the timing of those? Do you exercise in the morning, gaining the dopamine effect that it can bring, and lowering your feeling of depression? Is there something in your daily schedule that you don't want to do/participate in, that makes you feel sad? I think there are several factors that you can look at, that might be causing what you are experiencing. Good for you for trying to understand what is going on.

Thank you for the note. I don't currently take meds. I (this week) was prescribed an SSRI (Lexapro 10MG), but I haven't yet started. I'm hoping I can delay a bit and try to fix through lifestyle and if not, will try the SSRI.

No not yet. I have a prescription for 10MG of Lexapro, but haven't started yet.

I've had issues with anxiety -> if it gets really bad, it can flip over to feeling depressed. However - I've been on a 10 year streak without issues (I'm male, mid 50's). Not sure why all of a sudden it's coming back. Job is good, fam is good, no other health issues. So weird. . . . started when I had maybe 4 or 5 days or horrible sleep due to the holiday season (late night parties, early morning wake up). Thats the only thing I can think of - that week messed up my chemistry or something and it's sort of 'stayed stuck' since.

Thank you Patti. Yes, depression and anxiety seem to go together for some people. I have tried Buspirone before for anxiety and considering going back on that. Do you mind me asking what antidepressant you were taking. Best wishes to you also Patti.

I take a combo of buspirone, topiromate, wellbutrin and abilify. Kind of a lot of meds but I swear they’re really working great.

Waking up with morning anxiety that is overwhelming. It a very uneasy feeling. I'm going to a therapist and not taking any medications at this time. I have tried anti anxiety medications in the past and they didn't help much. Cardiologist has me taking propranolol for the physical symptoms of anxiety but it does not work for the mind with anxiety thoughts. I'm 72. Loss of husband in 2022 and this started before that.

Sorry to hear about your issues. Hopefully the med + therapy is helping. I'm in a similar boat re: crazy morning anxiety. I'm mi 50's, and this has been a bit of a recurring thing for me, that's recently cropped back up after a good 10 to 15 years of no issues.

I have had issues with morning anxiety as well. It makes me dread going to sleep, because I know in the morning I will feel awful. The first time I had this problem, I was taking prednisone. It raised my cortisol levels quite high (I know this from a blood test). Since our natural cortisol levels are highest in the morning anyway, this just magnified the "Cortisol Awakening Response". Any chance you have extra high cortisol levels? Extra anxiety can do the same thing.
I'm sorry, I know it feels terrible.

Yes I am going to a therapist and like her very much. Trying the breathing and mindfulness and just trying to work through the morning anxiety feelings.

How long have you been in Buspar? My doc put me on 15mg 2x/day and increased my duloxetine to 120(60 mg 2x/day) 4-5 days ago. I was good on 90mg of duloxetine for 3-4 years but a month and a half ago my anxiety came roaring back. What was/is your dose? Any side effects? Hard to tell what I’m having because after having anxiety/depression for so long it’s hard to figure out exactly how I’m feeling.

Thank you. The morning anxiety is so upsetting. I'm trying to work through this. It's a journey for sure. I'm sorry you are going through this also. Going to get all blood work done and make sure there are no issues there. Are you taking any meds?

Thank you. Yes I have heard about cortisol being higher in the morning. Going for blood work soon to get things checked out. I'm sorry you are going through this as well. It's an awful feeling. Are you on any meds at this time?

I was on Buspar a couple years ago and it helped a little. Then the doctor put me on a couple other medications and I had a reaction that put me in the hospital. I weaned off all medications. My cardiologist (no issues) has me taking Propanolol for anxiety. It helps with the physical part of anxiety but not the mind part if that makes any sense. I take a very little dose 10mg twice a day. That's it. I'm trying to work through this with therapy.

I also have the problem of mid morning severe depression and anxiety. But can pull out of it usually by 11 or 12. I am seeing a functional doctor now who suggests 30 minutes of exercise as early as possible in the day. I also have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue which makes it difficult to exercise in the am but I am going to do it. Starting tomorrow. The alternative is staying in bed all morning which does not work with my determination to staying active in my 68 year old life!
