Tips on minimizing withdrawal symptoms from Effexor (aka Venlafaxine)

Posted by richyrich @richyrich, Nov 2, 2016

I have been taking Effexor/Venlafaxine for years and tried to get off it a few times but each time I try to give up the chemical withdrawal symptoms are a horror story and I give up giving up. Anyone got any tips or tried and tested strategies? Thank you

I have been astounded to read here how many people have had problems with Effexor. I have not taken it nor would I if you paid me! I was surprised to find that Mayo Clinic mentions it as one drug that can be used for Panic and Anxiety Disorders. I would hope that nobody I know and care about would touch it with a ten foot pole!

Hi, @ainsleigh -- I've moved your post here about your feelings about reading about problems Mayo Clinic Connect members have posted related to venlafaxine/Effexor, as many of those who have discussed this medication have done so in this thread. Hoping members like @brightwings @tennessegirl @arachel @jmanon @pinktart @susanknits will share some of their insights on its use in light of experiences members have shared.

I read this as I was doing something else. I thought about there being no Effexor and I felt glad. Then I realized if It was banned I would probably be dead. Yes I was on it 26 years AND IT KEPT ME ALIVE.
My Docs tried 17 different antidepressants. This is the only one that worked.

My heart hurts for you. I lost a young adult child. Maybe someday I can write my story.

Thank you for honoring us with your story. I know you posted an hour ago and I have been processing this gut wrenching and beyond account of your path of Effexor.
I understand more than you can know because of the loss of 2 infants to abuse. I understand......
Hurrah for you for being brave enough to share a pain like no other...the loss of your child. She was the child of your heart, if not your body. I know there are many kinds of pain in the world but this is like no other in my humble opinion.
I am here with you and I suspect there are others coming to stand with you as you open this tremendous pain to share so the burden is not so heavy.
Now you stated you don't know who you are anymore. Boy, I can so relate to you with this. When I was 5, I declared I would be a nurse. I did too, until I became disabled after an operation. Long story short, I had to develop a new identity. Thank you for sharing. I am with you. Brightwings

My mother lost her first born when my brother committed suicide. He was successful with his 3rd attempt. Its a terrible thing for a family to go thru. We will be here when you choose to share. Perhaps it is time to let go of this so exquisite pain you have held so long. You are the best one to decide when and where you let go. Smiling at you, Bright Wings

No you are not the only one who didn't know. I had no idea either. If its banned, how is it still being prescribed.

My Dr quizzed me especially and specifically about it on my last appointment. I came home, read everything I could find. Let me say I should have used the words "is being banned". Could you imagine all of us nutball being suddenly cut off?!

How long have you been off the drug?

Not off! Want desperately to be off! I have read it is being banned in the US. Anyone else?

I've lost count of how many and I am glad it is being banned!
