My husband is nebulizing and using the vest daily. His coughing has increased quite a bit and I am wondering what is causing that. Any thoughts?

Do you have a hiatal hernia that is associated with your GERD?

Hi,
Just a thought... but what are you using in your nebulizer?
Long story short about me ~ I started coughing and doctor had me on an antibiotic which cleared it up; then I had a bronoscopy from which I woke with a cough. Tests found pseudomonas so doctor prescribed a round of tobramycin; I started that using the nebulizer and my cough came back. It was constant so my doctor told me to stop the nebulizer for a week, then start it again. By day 4 my cough had almost stopped. I am now on day 6. and my cough is back to what is "normal" for me. I need to try using the nebulizer again as I want to try to kill the pseudomonas bacteria. We'll see if the cough increases.
In any cases it possible what you are using in your nebulizer is causing your increased cough?

Thanks so much for your reply. I am at my wits end. My husband is the one who is coughing. He is using sodium chloride 7% in the nebulizer. He also had pseudonyms and has CHF. We hope to see the pulmonologist today and can ask her if stopping the nebulizer would help. I kind of remember he was coughing before he started a nebulizing session. Yesterday he did it 2/x w no vest. This morning he is trying it now and then using vest. Any advice is great appreciated. Thanks so much. Miriam

If I remember correctly when we nebulize it can cause us to cough due to it it's purpose of loosening the mucus to help make it easier to bring up and out the mucus.
Hope the pulmonologist visit gave you some answers.

Hi mirsy. I recently had surgery and coughing would not be a good thing. I nebbed the morning of the surgery and skipped the PM session. I usually do 1/2 vile of 7% sod chlor and 1/2 vile of the 3% and use the most powerful compressor I have. The next morning after the surgery I only used 3% sod chlor and used a "weaker" compressor. This worked great and there was very little coughing. About 2 weeks post op I went back to my old routine and coughing returned--only during the session which was normal. It was obvious I needed to get back on the old routine as the first day I coughed out green and brown stuff. Best to your husband.

Hi Miriam, unfortunately some coughing seems to be part of the condition to clear the mucus buildup but I was coughing constantly to the point the muscles across my stomach felt bruised! My cough became less frequent once I stopped the nebulizer but I need to go back on it to get the antibiotic into my lungs so will let you know if the cough comes back. Was your husband able to get rid of the pseudomonas?

We THINK he no longer has the pseudonomis. He had an xray yesterday to make sure there is no pneumonia causing the increased coughing. We havent received the results yet. The pulmonologist told him to nebulize 2x day and use the vest after the second treatment. Today he only nebulizer 1x and is coughing quite a bit. So tomorrow 2x for sure. Dick had several different antibiotic treatments and also did an IV antibiotic in the hospital for several days. Sure hope you will get rid of yours.

Yes he does cough alot right after nebulizing but his coughing sometimes goes on all evening. The pulmonologist thinks he needs to stick w the nebulzing 2x/day and the vest 1xday and she is checking w xray for pneumonia or infection.
