Neuropathy: What works and what are scams?

Posted by bigjohnscho @bigjohnscho, May 2, 2024

I am new to this forum although I have been suffering with peripheral neuropathy for 2 years (none diabetic). Like most sufferers I have searched endlessly to find supplements that provide some relief and a possible cure. My search has proved how impossible this quest is and so expensive due to misleading adverts and down right scams.
What would be really helpful if members posted their experiences with supplements they’ve tried , which were useless/helpful or obvious scams. I am sure there must be some helpful supplements out there and we would all benefit if these were posted on this forum.

Welcome @billydobbs, Sorry you haven't found something that provides some relief yet. Not sure if you have seen the Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy website yet but it has a pretty comprehensive list of complementary and alternative treatments that neuropathy patients have found helpful - https://www.foundationforpn.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Complementary-and-Alternative-Treatments-Revised-2020-final.-1.pdf.

What symptoms bother you the most?

@ditucson

My wife has peripheral neuropathy, and she has found that the vitamins and supplements recommended by Mayo do seem to provide some relief from her worst symptoms, but only if taken daily.

Would you please share more details on the vitamins and supplements that seem to be helping?

Welcome @extet, While there is no real cure for neuropathy there are many available treatments that offer some level of relief. It can be a confusing journey trying to find what helps each of us and there are a lot of members on Connect that have shared what has helped them. I shared my neuropathy journey in another discussion along with other members here - Member Neuropathy Journey Stories: What's Yours? - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/member-neuoropathy-journey-stories-whats-yours/.

There are also many other discussions and member comments on what has helped. Here's a link to the list of discussions and comments - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/?search=neuropathy+what+helps.

The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy has a pretty comprehensive list of treatments including complementary and alternative ones here - https://www.foundationforpn.org/treatments/.

If you don't mind sharing, how long have had neuropathy and what symptoms do you have that bother you the most?

@debbiehirsch, I only have numbness and tingling with my neuropathy. I can't imagine how awful it would be I also had pain to go along with the numbness. You are not alone having tried a lot of different treatments with nothing really giving you any relief. I think some members with similar symptoms have found some relief through a pain rehabilitation clinic. There is a discussion that you might want to read what others have shared.

Hoping you don't give up and you find something that provides relief soon.
