Anyone familiar with a Suprapubic catheter? I chose this over urethral catheter. I had bilateral hydronephrosis that needed attention. The Suprapubic catheter needs to be changed monthly and I chose to have my urologists office do it. Would love to hear from others with a Suprapubic catheter. Thanks.
Everything I know (that's not much since I am not a doctor) isas you were told, that is NO.
And I will NOT resort to surgery for a MAYBE better situation (until I am convinced otherwise). So...self cathing is my only way to "go". I'm in it for the long haul! I'm 72 and plan to hit the century mark. Damn, that's a whole lot of catheters 😉
Hello
I just started to self cath a few months ago and have absolutely no problem with it. I live in a beach town in Mexico and a bag really shouldn’t be worn with shorts on. I some days forget in the afternoon to cath and only do it 3 times a day. The doctor says I should do it 5 times a day. I don’t really understand why. Does anyone have an understanding of why we are supposed to do it 5 times a day?
Yes, I do. Mine is the result of drinking over 100 oz. of water daily due to stage 4 kidney failure. I didn't know this until I recently went to a P T specializing in bladder control. Thought I was just getting old and having leaky bladder. If that were the case, she could have been a great help.

@earltmiller Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I do not self-cath so I cannot offer any experience. But logically, my mind goes to the idea of not over-extending your bladder, and helping keep your kidneys healthy. Does this sound plausible to you?

Yes I am I interested! I self cath 4 times daily, had trouble with UTI’s, but think I have gotten it under control now! Would be interested in knowing what others are doing!

Yes I irrigate the bladder before bed with a saline solution and acetic acid mixture! Started doing it with a neomycin/polymoxin and saline solution, but was unable to get this antibiotic, so now use the acetic acid mixture with the saline!

If you don't want to cath at all or maybe one or two times a day........go to Mayo Clinic!!! If you have an enlarged prostate a HoLep procedure can be done. Dr Wymer performed it on me and I can now empty my bladder completely and only have to cath once in a great while. There have been a LOT of prayers on my behalf and I give God the glory for this amazing recovery. I was cathing 4 times a day.........NOT any more. Dr Wymer at Rochester, Minnesota. My family physician referred me to MAYO. Check it out!!!
Thanks very much for sharing your experience. I have no indication of your gender, but I’m not sure I could accurately identify my fairly well-hidden urethral opening. I find myself wondering if it isn’t easier for males because of the more obvious anatomical access. Any observations from other women will be greatly appreciated. I’m currently satisfied with my ability to empty using a combo of ( diminishing) muscle control, gravity and positioning my upper body and torso to apply natural pressure to the bladder area. I’ve also started doing Kegels every day, which should help?

Yes I feel the same way! Then I look around and see people who are blind or in a wheel chair, and I feel small for even thinking that!

How did you get the repetition of UTIs under control. Is there a long-term solution?
Did you find a long term solution to avoid repetitive UTS?
