Anyone tried using red light therapy?

Posted by domokane @domokane, Jul 29, 2023

There seems to be some evidence that photobiomodulation - heating the skin via infra red light - has some benefits for stimulating nerve re growth. There are lots of devices available on Amazon as well as lots of seemingly expensive treatments provided by chiropractors.

I would be interested to know of any personal experience with such devices and any possible recommendations.

I can't speak to red light therapy except to say it seems to be provided mostly by chiropractors. The few I know who have tried it have had mixed reviews. I know there are different wave lengths so maybe that is the difference. The idea is that the light and heat penetrate deeper than other methods.
I believe the reason you don't get much of an answer to the question about different causes is because the treatments aren't that different. One exception is the treatment of the underlying root cause.

The suite of medications they pick from is the same, but really is just to mask the pain, they do nothing in the way of repair or regrowth. That has to come from (if it is possible for your nerves) good nutrition, stimulation, and oxygen. these are the three things nerves need to be thier healthiest.

Red Light Therapy.. I invested in a full body panel..My many ailments need long term regular use..so it is still new to me
Depending on what you are treating short term salon treatments can work. Since becoming more popular the light strength and combinations, styles have exploded..
There are so many opinions on treatments and where to get one for personal use..my suggestion is a YouTube and a FB group..just search red light therapy.. Alex Fergus I think is his name but he tests many many machines and posts results.. FB has a great group for asking questions..
myself I still have much to learn and am interested in shockwave therapy but some Dr’s I have quizzed have said it’s a money grab? Typical.. imo

Welcome @mayoneuro41, Thanks for sharing your experience. Sounds like good news indeed. I've had numbness with no pain as my symptoms for my idiopathic small fiber PN for 30+ years but not diagnosed until 2016. Prior to being diagnosed my PCP put me on gabapentin but it didn't help so I stopped it after a discussion with my Mayo Care team who referred me to a neurologist where I was diagnosed. I'm glad to hear you have had some success with both the cold laser and gabapentin.

How are you now? Has anything helped the numbness?

I bought a canvas bag for my feet with 160 tiny red bulbs inside. I've used it on and off for the last month, mostly at night while I watch TV. At the very least, it warms my chronically freezing feet. I haven't noted any changes beyond that but it's a start...

An enclosed red light made me dizzy for a couple days. Wonder why. I didn’t dare do again.

Hi. I would have to say not yet for the red light ..I d hold out some hope for the sonic wave..quite a few places Chiro and physio seem to have that service and some good reviews from ppl who have had success with it.. I just got a new vibration/ heat foot machine.. it leaves my feet tingling which I believe indicates more blood flow to the area which is a good thing..I have only had it a few days..I will post if I find any good results..

I hope something works for you. Do you know what caused your small fiber? Do you have numbness and tingling everywhere?

Yes My feet are very often freezing.. the pad while nice for warming I don’t think is a strong enough light to do healing.
I think you need 650 range to 890 range light or 4 light ranges of strength…being red light and infrared light..
Infrared goes deeper..
IMO .. red light is still so new the “opinions” on treatment and strength of light…it again requires lots of reading …join some specific RLT groups read and ask questions..
hope this helps a bit

Google search. Alex Fergus

Hi. Starting and going slow is suppose to be the way to start..your system could have been overwhelmed.. were you in one that is designed like a tanning bed.. bottom and top comes down over you.. do you know what strength lights you had etc etc …depending on light strength probably start at 5 min max.. and work up very slowly… If it was in a place that does this and charges ..they should have talked with you about this..

I read your profile about the Gabapentin. Gabapentin is insidious. It stole a whole year from me. I slept probably 18 hours a day. I weaned off of cymbalta and weaned off of Gabapentin. But read that getting off Gabapentin can cause heart issues!!! So you are like stuck once you start!!! I take only 1 at night to hopefully keep my heart from pounding so hard.
Today, I did physical therapy and did several hip flexor positions. It wasn't hard, it was steady positions and stretching. An hour later, I felt a humming in my feet. I hadn't felt that before. It was pleasant for once. It gives me hope too. I must have a nerve being closed off at the hip to my feet. It makes me motivated to continue with hip stretches. And core work. I am exhausted though, and look forward to recuperating enough to have stamina to continue with the exercises. Gabapentin is a catch all drug. It seems like every one I know/ or their spouse is on it. I was prescribed 8 Eight a day by a neurologist. I complained to my GP and he said cut the dose in half. Which I did. And then I cut that in half, and then half again, ending up at 1 a day.
