Prescribed Farxiga for CKD with type 2 diabetes: Frightened
I am been Diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. I was given Farxiga but I am scared of the side effect. Diabetes caused this problem. I don't think I was given the right medication for Diabetes. I am frightened and severely depressed.
If anyone else has this this problem, I hope we can talk . I am 81 with no other health issues.

Farxiga is prescribed for CKD with type II diabetes. One of the side effects is anxiety. It may not be the best medication for you. You might call your medical office and ask for a list of alternative medications. Meanwhile keep communicating here. What is your EGFR that indicates chronic kidney disease? Farxiga has a patient assistance card. 1-855-332-7944
The drug reduces the chance of heart failure, which you don't seem to have a risk for. It can cause rapid weight loss and ketoacidosis.
Your cost at Mayo will depend upon your insurance. If you have medicare you may be able to have a video consult. What state are you in? You could get a second opinion close by.
You don't have to take this new medication.

2 ReactionsI was prescribed Farxiga in February, as I have protein leaking into my urine. My eGFR was 49 in February; now, in June, it's 39. Farxiga states that a small drop in eGFR isn't uncommon, but is a 10% drop considered "small"? I already have CKD and Type 2 diabetes. Treatment for the diabetes consists of Mounjaro 12.5 weekly and 1500 mg of Metformin daily. Any insight I greatly appreciate.

1 Reaction@deloachj1 That is a 10 point, but 20% drop. Since adverse effects from Farxiga are more common for Type 2 diabetics you should bring this up with your doctor to make sure everything is okay. Also make sure you are well hydrated since that is a common problem. Besides the use for CKD Farxiga should lower blood sugar since it allows glucose and sodium to past into the urine.

2 Reactions@jim18 Thank you! I'm seeing my nephrologist tomorrow afternoon, and I already have my list of questions ready. I've also stopped taking the Farxiga as of yesterday. The doctor did not inform me of the potential side effects and left me with the impression that this was to prevent the protein from leaking. Do you or anyone else know if this protein is the type that's found in food, or is it a protein that is made in our bodies? Thanks again for taking the time to answer my concerns.
@deloachj1 It is any protein that is circulating in the blood. The protein action is indirect. By allowing the kidneys to pass glucose and sodium there is better filtering for other items in the blood. The glucose in urine can lead to UTIs.
