@pirtle2

I began taking Fosamax in October this year, and a couple weeks ago, started experiencing scratched/inflamed gums. This has never happened in the past and at first, I didn't realize this was a side effect of the medication, but the inflammation has persisted. So, I'm going to stop taking Fosamax for a few weeks and see if my gums return to normal.

Have you gone to your dentist?

One of the side effects of FOSAMAX IS: "osteonecrosis of the jaw," which means the bone tissue in the jaw can die, potentially causing jaw pain, numbness, loose teeth, and exposed jawbone.

I'm not sure. Ask your physician many questions.

I will be seeing an endocrinologist April 2025. January 2025 I will return to therapy and I will ask about weight bearing exercises. I've been reading posts where women have stated that weight bearing exercises have greatly improved bone health. Don't know ages of any of the participants. I'm 4'10" & 80 yrs of age. Lifting barbells at my age with my bad knees isn't going to work for me at this writing.

I have had two shots of Prolia since being diagnosed with osteoporosis. My PCP wanted me to go on Fosamax but I refused because I have GERD. I'm worried about long term effects of the Prolia. Can you just go off it without going on something else? I wish I never started it. TY

No you can’t just go off Prolia because of the rebound effect. Make sure you research this it is very dangerous and you would be susceptible to spontaneous vertebral fractures

Do you also have a competent endocrinologist who can help you with this. By competent I mean someone who is experienced in bone health and up to date on the latest info on osteoporosis medication sequencing.

I see one in March, I hope he is competent!

I took Fosamax for about 2 years. It was, for me, an increasingly wretched experience. Indigestion was minor, but annoying. Flatulence and diarrhea were got worse with time. The "bone" it supposedly grew was not really bone at all -- more of a calcium deposit masquerading as bone and doing no functional good. I had diarrhea off and on throughout, but especially on the day I took it and the day following. It (the diarrhea) got increasingly unmanageable and eventually explosive. The final straw was being (alone, fortunately) in a large lobby outside a college auditorium I was about to enter. What felt like it would be a small fart to relieve gas pressure instead filled my pantyhose with an explosive and completely uncontrollable amount of diarrhea and sent me scurrying to a restroom for a major and embarrassing cleanup effort. No more Fosamax for me, ever. And if I can dissuade you, so much the better. Nasty drug!

I am recovering from 2 atypical femur fracture surgeries. My daughter has been taking AlgaeCal and AlgaeCal boost and has gone from osteoporosis to osteoporosis to osteopenia. I have seen no messages about using this supplement. It was prescribed by her MD.
