Persistent productive cough for more than 1 year!

Posted by btsum68 (Blaine Summers) @btsum68, Dec 18, 2024

Hi, my name is Blaine, a 70 year old man. I have several issues with my mind, body, soul, +. I am here, hoping to find some answers/cures for what has disrupted my entire being for what seems like an eternity!
I would like to take one issue at a time, so I don't get confused, overwhelmed and frustrated! About a year ago I developed a productive cough that at times I cough so hard I pass out or I am unable to take in any air, so I am struggling to breath, my throat starts to get dry, so now I am gasping and seem to have no control over what is happening. This will sometimes be very persistent, then again, I might not have an episode for an hour or so. I have been to a Pulmonologist, had several tests done and COPD, Asthma, etc., basically all the tests that should be taken, have been with no prognosis. Like I said in the beginning, I have several issues as well as concerns and I don't want to be bombarded, so I would like to ask your help one item at a time unless anyone feels that all my symptoms are a packaged deal and that one thing might lead to another. I would like to thank you all in advance in hopes we will be able to help one another! Please let me know, if more info. is needed and I shall provide what I can! Blaine Summers

also 70m ,
persistent urge to cough, to cough - first (10min?) dry then productive
for hours. Better at night and after eating
It suddenly started after pneumonia in May and I try to "see" the reason for it on the CTs.
Bulla,widened airway, (hydro-)pneumothorax
(you may want to get a CT ?!)

My case:
I had 2 month nagging cough this year. Based on my doc saying that coughing problems start with nasal congestion, I took the simple approach first:
1. Rinsed nasal passages 2 times a day with NeilMed.
2. Used Flonase spray, 2 sprays each nostril once a day for 4 days: only 1 spray in each nostril on day 5.
3. For existing lung congestion: I took Mucinex for 5 days, only half the prescription, plus I took prescribed 40mg of prednisone for 3 days, then 20 on day 4, then 1/2 of a pill or 10mg on day 5.
4. I now also use NasalCrom if I feel a cough coming on. I only need to do it for one day.
Doc thought I had COPD or asthma, but all coughing is gone, 4 months and doing fine.

We are all different, but I hope this helps a bit. I think that a pollen allergy was my nemesis. At 80, I'll be more careful next season; will treat nasal passages with NeilMed and NasalCrom to nip coughing in the bud.
Regards,
Sagan

@btsum68 I have something similar. My ENT told me that because I have acid reflux, the acid is coming up and burning my vocal cords. My body is producing excess amounts of mucus to protect my throat. That mucus makes me cough, and choke so hard I vomit.
The answer is to take a teaspoon of liquid Mylanta before bedtime.

It works for me.

My GERD creates a regurgitation that blocks my nasal passages and my throat leaving me gasping for air. I thought this was just part of having Pulmonary Fibrosis, but am learning that it is completely separate. My hiatal hernia is the culprit. Look into hiatal hernia regurgitation. Large volume acid reflux is what I am copiously spitting, coughing up, and blowing from my nose. A new medication and following the well-known "rules" of GERD are helping me. A surgery to alleviate hiatal hernia issues is in my future. Acid reflux and pulmonary problems are a terrible mix.

I was wondering about this. Especially at night with (gas-) reflux.
But can cough be related to "the other" pipe,
the food-pipe ?? The pipes only meet up, above in the throat and the cough
seems to come from below , pressure is created in the bronchial system

@bsi15 the acid comes up from your stomach into your windpipe.

I'd smell/feel the acid in the throat, at least when it's liquid.
When it's gaseous it should irritate the nose, mouth as well.
Maybe it does since I have renewing palate evry couple of weeks/months.
I never found this "symptom of GERD ?) mentioned anywhere.

However, what causes coughing ? I think it's from mucous or foreign material
accumulating in the bronchii, so maybe some cough-nerves in the bronchii/trachea

Perhaps see a pulmonologist. Although my husband’s constant coughing turned out to be post nasal drip, not a lung issue, pulmonologist worked with him until he found the right combo of allergy pill and nasal sprays that worked for him.

This is not something to ignore. In May 2022 I was hospitalized for what would be 34 days. I was told at one point that the doctors didn’t think I would make it. 6 months previously I had been hiking almost daily in the mountains of northern AZ (7500 - 8000 ft). I now have severe scaring in both lungs and ILD (Interstitial Ling Disease) which requires me to be on oxygen 24/7 when up in Northern AZ now. See a medical professional and get a chest x-ray. I have been to Mayo Clinic in Rochester twice since, once for a lung biopsy and once for a fundoplication surgery. The fundoplication surgery was to prevent GERD from (possibly) causing more damage. This has been a life changing experience, don’t guess, seek medical attention. In my case the root cause has yet to be determined.
