Fibromyalgia pain: Let's connect

Posted by clownscrytoo @clownscrytoo, Oct 22, 2016

Is there anyone here that suffers from fibro? I had the 'tender spot test' several years ago and I had 17 out of the 18. I try my hardest to get through the pain with my 4 hydrocodone/acetaminaphine pills a day, Tiger Balm rubbed into areas that are the worst, light exercises, and distracting myself with hobbies or chores, etc; but there are many occasions where none of that helps and I spend most of the day holding down the couch, getting up about 30-45 minutes after that, walking/standing around the house for 15-20 minutes, or sitting for about 15-30 min. I do not drive and my husband works 6 days a week, overtime almost every day, so I'm alone a lot. my wonderful husband is very supportive and I am very grateful for that, but my only other friends are online, out of state, and I will probably never even get to meet them. when extreme pain takes over, my depression takes over and it is so difficult to find hope. does anyone have tips for fibro, whether diet or over-the-counter meds (I've tried them all, I think), or anything, besides hobbies and such? I've tried every over-the-counter med, and the Tiger Balm does cover some of what the pain pill doesn't help, but I'm hoping one of our members might have some knowledge that could help. I'd really appreciate it.

@oregongirl So new to accepting the idea of using medical marijuana. But I;m hearing some postitive things from you all. Has it helped anyone's spinal stenosis pain? I live in Calif. Not sure how expensive the herb would be, and I'm sure Medicare is not covering it yet. Keep the comments flowing. Would like to learn and have more hope.

My word, your story mimics mine to a T and probably many other members too. You are so not alone. I take the same meds, am 70 years old and my spinal stenosis issues add to my pain. I too am a bed potato while I wait for the meds to kick in, and I lay on a heating pad for my lower back stenosis pain. Good thing you have an understanding husband.....so do I and that so helps. I take life one day at a time, cannot volunteer or do the hobbies I like. I stand on God's promises that He will come along side of me. I get physical therapy when a fibro knot or a degenerated spinal disc goes way out of whack. Sometimes I log into the "just want to talk" section of Mayo Connect because I need to vent. I notice that if I have a busy day, the next day is a total wash out. I try to run only one or two errands a day, and the next day I'm down for the count. I no longer feel ashamed. Trying to maintain good posture helps. Computer chair sitting can aggrevate. Drink plenty of fluids. Move when you can. When you can't, rest. May God bless you, show you favor and plenty of friends who understand. Sending you a basketful of love.

Hi!
Seems like so many of us have been suffering in much the same way as you. I am 63 (in a month) and retired on SSI.
I suffered from Fibro for over 30 years. After taking amitriptalyn (spelling?) to get into a deep sleep, loosing weight, exercising, chiropractor and massage therapy, my Fibro is well under control. The only time it bothers me is when some touches the hot spots or tried to undo the knots.
I also suffer from cervical and lumbar spinal stenosis as well as other issues with my spine. The pain was so bad that for over 2 years I basically stopped walking. I went to 5 pain docs and 3 years ago I found one who has been able to deal with my lumbar stenosis with injections, but no success with the cervical stenosis. I've decided to go the surgical route. In 2 weeks I am having the troublesome discs in my cervical spine removed and replaced with artificial ones.
I too, have a very understanding husband and family. I know longer do any household chores or cooking, my husband does it all. I too can only do a couple of chores outside the home. If I spend the day out, I am done for the rest of the day and the next one.
I continue to get shots in my lumbar to keep walking but I will probably do surgery for that as well. I am concerned about the amount of steroids I get and the impact on my bones, especially at my age.
Best wishes to us all!
ronnie

I am 75 and I can assure you, medicare will not approve Marijuana until way after I am gone. When I lived in Oregon, there was a pot shop on every corner. My general doctor gave me permission to use. That was $200.00, then I had to pay the State, I believe that is over 200.00 A YEAR. Yes it works. It works great. In Oregon, it is the Seniors who are going to the Pot Shops. The govt wants our money so they maintain the shops in Oregon. The state is racking in funds. What is wrong with Texas? But, remember we are fighting the drug companies. I have excellent care in Texas or I would move back to Oregon. But remember, it is expensive EVERY year. Even the Bible says that God gave us every herb. But, our Government wants to make sure they are in charge of the millions they rake in from Marijuana.

My PT taught me to constrict my muscles. It really helps the pain! Also stretching exercises. Ditto your story is me.

I am looking for a RA discussion

Jump to this post

Hello @oregongirl,

We have lots of members talking about having RA, but they are spread among many different conversations. I suggest going to the Autoimmune Diseases group here, https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/autoimmune-diseases/tab/discussions/ and starting a new discussion on Rheumatoid Arthritis. Here is how you can do that:

- Click on the group that you would like to start a new discussion in (Autoimmune Diseases)
- From the Group’s homepage, click on the grey box that reads START A DISCUSSION. It is located just under the blue DISCUSSIONS tab.
- Type a brief title, but be descriptive so that other members know exactly what you will be discussing.
- Type your message. This is where you can type in more detail about what you are experiencing or have questions about.
- In the bottom right corner from where you just typed your message, click the grey CREATE DISCUSSION box.
