What downside have you experienced after an ablation?

Posted by mishel @mishel, Dec 5 1:38pm

I am 69 and have had an abib episodes every 2 months for a year; otherwise, I am healthy. I am approaching a decision to have an ablation and am assessing Pulsed Field Ablation vs. RF ablation and general anesthesia vs. deep sedation. I would love to know if you have experienced side effects such as tiredness, Hemolysis, Cardiac spasm, Gastric issues, Other. Have you tried to take medications such as Flacainade instead of having an ablation?
Thank you so much!

@shrnrsh

Are there long term risks with this med?
Do you experience any side affects from it? Assuming you still have to take eloquis or some blood thinner?

I’ve been on dofetilide for over 10 years and don’t know of any side effects. The only downside is that you initially need a nospitstay while they determine the right dose. And then, every 3 months I need an EKG and a blood draw but have never had and negatives from those. A minor inconvenience for me.

I did not have any problems with my ablation. I wanted one because I was tired of being cardioverted- 4 times in 9 months. After reading long term effects of taking anti arrhythmic meds I was glad to be off of them. My cardiologist and EP doctor offered the ablation for the same reasons. My EP doctor said some people need a “tune up” down the line after the ablation. It has been 10 months and no more afib or problems. Fingers crossed.

I’m booked for an ablation in a few months - concerned about the amount of soreness where the catheters are inserted in the groin and how long did it take to heal - were you too sore to walk?

Hi - in 2022, I had 2 ablations; healing was quick/easy. For example, I could ride after both within 5 days [dressage.] I hope that helps!

The catheters sites did not pose any problems. I had no issues walking.

I had a Pulse Field Ablation on June 3rd. Catheter port areas were sore but not a big deal and only for a day or so and they didn’t interfere with general living. Best part is no afib since. Wish you the best with it!
