Side effects of Eylea injections

Posted by lvon @lvon, Feb 16, 2020

I had one injection of a drug called Eylea in my eye which was 95 percent cured from using Avastan. My eye went back down to 30 percent with this new drug to the point where my sight is darkened and blurry. Has anyone had this problem after trying the drug Eyelina? Did you get your sight back?

thanks so much for replying.

I didn't have any trouble with Lucentis. had many shots.
But that was with a different Dr. who is too far away
for me to continue to see.

This Dr. says he gives Eylea in his practice.
He was recommended by a friend.
i go back for 2nd eylea shot in left eye on 6/6/24.
I will tell the Dr. about headaches and blurriness then.

i am not due for right eye shot of eylea til 7/9/24

@newyorknill, It was normal for me to have discomfort after my eye injections, and it was relieved with 1 tylenol and a short nap with a cool washcloth over my eyes. Injection nday was my 'lazy' day.
I am curious and concerned because of your reaction to the injected medication in your left eye. I would hate for you to have a similar reaction in your right eye on 6/6/24. That is why I want to suggest that you notify his office, and ask the to let him know about yur reaction.
This may or may not be a concern, but, I think it is best to let him know ahead of your next visit. That way he is not surprised or in thr middle of a hectic day that could affect how he addresses this. Most medical providers provide a phone number and encourage patient to call with any concerns after a treatment. Do you have a a phone number where you can speak to someone who can relay your message to him? Or maybe you can be connected to one of the nurses from the office contact phone.
I hope that your next visit and injection go well for you. Are you feeling okay now?

You can, but they suggest you do Tylenol and rest afterwards. I have been doing eyes for 6 years , once every 3 months now. My eyes have adjusted to the injections and they wash them out really well afterwards and I have no side effects. You should always be careful not to wash your hair or get any dust in your eyes for 24 hours. This procedure is considered an out patient surgery and you must be mindful of germs afterwards. You will adjust. I now have 20/20 vision in each eye. So grateful!

@newyorknill, I thought of something else that I might not have shared. My retina doctor was not giving me Eylea injections. The injection I was getting was Lucentis.
I remember that once, I was given Eylea, and as soon as the doctor realized it, he became very concerned. I had to wait in the office for observation for a while but don't remember the details. Anyway, I was okay, He wanted me to call him if I had any reaction - which I didn't. And he had me call him the next day to check in with him.
I don't know why he wanted me on the other medication. It could have been insurance? or my medical history? or my condition?
Perhaps there is another medication that you could ask the retina doctor about.

- And Please - contact the doctor about the blood shot eye and pain. Could be something or could be nothing. When was your injection? Can you call him or drop in to the office?

I always have a bloodshot eye after the injection. I've tried eating spinach and taking a vitamin K supplement before I go. I also use Lumify drops. Nothing so far has completely worked. It can last for 3 weeks and the problem is I do on camera video production for work!

Just my 2 cents on Eyelea, which I have had injected for a period of 10 years.
I did have one case of blood shot eye, a call to Drs office assured me this can occur if a minor blood vessel in the eye was touched by the injection.
I am happy to say that for the past three years I have not. required any injections. Both eyes are now stable, but I see my retinologist on a regular schedule. I am aware new bleeding can occur at any time, but am hopeful it will not.
I also have taken Presser Vision regularly with no problem

Husband, age 79, has never been on meds for his (dry) macular degeneration. Mayo-Jxkvl dept chair, Mike Stewart, recommended he use Preservision Arends 2 (OTC, 2/day). He's had cataracts removed on both eyes, plus YAG laser on both last wk. So far, so good.

How long has your husband had dry AMD? I'm guessing he's intermediate and stable? He would be considered mild, right? I'm looking for any information I can get on this horrible disease. I am 56 and diagnosed two years ago. It's freaked me out but I have calmed down some over the past few months. I didn't even want to be here anymore if I lose my vision, that's where I was with my diagnosis. Any words of encouragement is greatly appreciated.
I'm so happy your husband is doing well. ❤️

@lisalucier I’m not familiar with aflibercept (Eyelea). My Dad had macular degeneration but I don’t think he had any prescriptions for it. He had samples of vitamins/supplements given to him by his ophthalmologist and and he later bought them over the counter (OTC). They were supposed to be beneficial for macular degeneration.

I’m diabetic and had diabetic retinopathy. I had a vitreoretinal hemorrhage and ended up needing a vitrectomy & laser surgery and later followed by cataract surgery. The diabetic retinopathy has been reversed in that eye. It is very mild in the other eye. Now I‘m legal to drive & I don’t even need glasses! (I have reading glasses for reading because I’m getting old 😉)

I had a pancreas transplant to ward off the complications of diabetes. It has helped in numerous ways, one is described above. But I do still have chronic kidney disease (CKD) and will be needing a kidney transplant. I’m thankful to God that I’m in pretty good shape for the shape I’m in.
