Dehydration: What helps maintain hydration with bowel issues?

Posted by tjanet @tjanet, Nov 13, 2024

Any ideas of what can help with dehydration? I have short gut syndrome and get dehydrated a lot. According to a GI specialist plain water can make me more dehydrated. Fluids need to have sodium and glucose in them for my body to absorb.
I get constipated a lot when I get dehydrated.
Recently I started drinking coconut water and it's been helping my constipation.
I have 2ft. of my small intestines left,I have my large intestines still.
I am able to eat most foods. My diet has been high carbs, high protein low fiber. I need to gain weight also.

Found out that my Short gut syndrome caused dehydration which caused stage 3 kidney failure.
I need to increase my fluids but not by drinking plain water. At some point I will get IV fluids 5 times a week, which will help my condition.

@tjanet Please be careful about what you use to hydrate. Sodium and glucose, along with potassium and calcium, are things to monitor in chronic kidney disease. I am a dialysis patient, My go-to for hydration is water, but I add either True Lemon or True Orange to my water, so there is some flavor.

Has your nephrologist offered any suggestions for hydration?

Because of my Short gut syndrome my fluids need to have sodium and glucose in them for fluids to absorb. Plain water doesn't absorb enough in my body. Doctors have said to drink hydration drinks with sodium and glucose. Limit Plain water because it can dehydrate me more easily. My body can only handle 20 ounces of fluids before I get nauseated.
My kidney problem was caused by dehydration.

Fluids are not generally restricted during stage 3a unless there are symptoms of retention such as difficulty breathing or swelling in feet/ankles.

Just curious, have you tried adding more salt in your diet? I never salt my food. But when I started having issues with my bowels and dehydration, I started salting everything. It honestly tasted so good! I guess i was missing that sodium. But I started to notice a difference in my body. However, for me, it was after a colonoscopy, and I saw that my sodium level was barely below the "normal" level in my labs. I also believe my colon was sluggish from the anesthesia, but....I did that on my own. I think it helped.

Yes I use salt on my food. A dietitian told me to make salt my friend.

@tjanet wonderful! Hope you can find an electrolyte beverage that helps and is tasty.

I see people have mentioned Gatorade. The only thing I can add is, Body Armor. It was the only that actually made us feel better during covid a few years ago. I swear by it.

@tjanet how do you get started with IV fluids? I just cannot maintain without being in the hospital. I feel my best connected to an IV, my stomach just doesn’t hold very much, I get really full really fast!!

I got an order from my GI doctor. Then got a home health agency that has RNs and the agency can supply me with the IV fluids. I have a port a cath and a nurse comes once a week to put a port needle in then after my 5 days of IV fluids I take the port needle out.

@tjanet thank you. I guess I need to further investigate why I don’t feel/stay hydrated.
