Statins

Anyone with muscle problems whilst taking statins? Did your doctor discontinue it? I am taking pitavastatin 1 mg daily and have muscle soreness. Thanks in advance for any input.

I couldn't do Repatha so I do Praluent. Injectable as well. do have some muscle pain in my right leg however I have issues anyway with my muscles because of a total knee replacement. I don't know if it's due to the replacement or the statin because it seemed to get better when I stopped the Repatha for a bit before starting the Praluent. I also take CoQ10. I'm debating stopping it for a month and see. It seems I can't take much any and did to the Praluent before the surgery with no issues. Of course they tell you it's not the Praluent or statin.

Just a bit off topic. What muscle issues are you having since the TKR? It takes a while for things to settle after a TKR. The rehab takes 2-3 months and it can take a full year for everything to settle into a new normal.

The surgeon also makes a small, vertical cut into the quad muscle right above the patella. This is necessary to release the patella and push it to the side during surgery.

But just changes to gait can have an affect on other parts of the lower body.

Muscle enzymes (CK and aldolase) can be checked in blood to show muscle damage caused by statins. This can be a serious side effect! I am on Repatha injections twice a month and it has cut my cholesterol in half! Very effective if you end up on that. Expensive but the PAN Foundation has a patient assistance program that puts copayments to zero if you qualify.

@slkanowitz do you have to inject the Repatha yourself, or does your doctor do it? I wonder if a pharmacist would do it … I hate self injecting!

My husband was prescribed Repatha ( he had to stop Repatha due to bad side effect) and he injected himself his first dose. It works as a EpiPen for allegies. A small tube that you need to press on your stomach. It doesn’t hurt according to my husband. Call your doctor, his nurse can do that for you, it is her duty as a nurse. Stay well.

You're very welcome. My high cholesterol seems to be purely genetic. I'm 5'10" and 160 lbs, I've never had a problem with weight - big caveat - as long as I ate a healthy diet, avoid added sugar, and hit cardio exercising consistently and with intent.

My Mom barely weighed 100 lbs and had a total cholesterol reading consistently around 300. So I don't think I have a choice but to use a statin.

I do believe that for some people cholesterol can be maintained in a healthy range with a proper and healthy diet and regular exercise - and keeping weight as close to normal as possible.

You may try to change your statin? I know some individuals that have good luck on the injectable Repatha used bi-weekly. Your concern is valid as it can be a side effect in up to 20% of individuals I have read. As others mentioned, change in diet, exercise etc may be beneficial

I have a brother-in-law that tried every statin there is and couldn't take any of them. He was put on Repatha and is loving it. Your doctor has to prove that you have tried everything on the planet first to get it covered

Definitely worth pursuing from what I understand l; however can be expensive

Repatha comes in a Sure Click form that makes self injection easy. It’s a prefilled cartridge and all you do is wipe skin ( I use abdominal fat) with alcohol swab, press cartridge hard against skin and push button. Anyone in family can do it for you as well. It’s fast, easy, but stings for a couple of seconds.
