Difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep

Posted by ranarizk @ranarizk, Nov 1, 2024

I have struggled with getting quality uninterrupted sleep since I was a child. I am now 40 years old. It’s getting harder to maintain life with little sleep. I keep trying different habits, general sleep hygiene tips, I know I can exercise more regularly but even when I was dancing 5 times a week I still had the same sleep difficulties. It’s difficult to fall asleep before midnight and I often wake up around 3 or 4am, then don’t sleep till about 6am. I need to get up around 7:30am for work. I have been trying 300 mg of gabapentin with melatonin for 6 months, it helped initially but now I feel it has stopped working. Can someone advise if:
- does Long term use of gabapentin has negative side effects?
- I am not ecstatic to be taking an anti seizure medication for sleep - you thoughts?
- any idea what causes this waking up between 3-4am?
- do we get easily addicted to gabapentin to where I would need to increase the dose?

He definitely has sleep apnea and has used a cpap for years. He tried melatonin and that didn't seem to to a thing for him. We will discuss Trazodone and the others you mentioned. Have not heard of any of them. Is CBN and THC over the counter? Thank you for your help.

The sleep gummy I use can be purchased on-line from the Minny Grown website. The gummy contains 10mg CBN and 5mg THC and is called Highbernate. It's $30 for 10 gummies. I usually wait for a sale to buy from them, or order from a local store's website: biotanicacbdstore.com because their price is $10 cheaper (plus $6 flat rate shipping).

I talked with my doctor about the night awakening. He made suggestions about me trying to do it myself and said to let him know if we need to try something else. I will try what he said. He said to try getting out of bed if I can’t resume sleep after 15 minutes. Go to another room. Don’t watch tv or anything electronic. (This will be difficult for me.) Return after 30 minutes or if I get sleepy again. Also, he said that caffeine, even if it’s only in the morning can affect sleep. He said that when we are young, caffeine metabolizes quicker than when we get older. I doubt that 1 cup of coffee would be the culprit, but I’m going to do an experiment and see. He said melatonin normally helps with getting to sleep, but not staying asleep. I got the impression that he will prescribe me something if it continues.

Hopefully my experience can help you. I have had insomnia most of my life. I just dealt with it until my 40's, when I was prescribed ambien. It helped me fall and stay asleep, but I began to have terrible night sweats and daytime anxiety so it was switched to klonopin. - oh my, but that was a miracle sleep drug and I took 1mg every night at bedtime and slept long and hard. It thought I would take it forever, until I moved to Georgia in my 60's. There was a hard push to get me off it and one by one, doctors would not prescribe it. A young pyschiatrist convinced me it was dangerous for "seniors" so I did a 10 month taper, followed by 9 months of terrible insomnia - some nights I never slept at all. I tried all the behavioral interventions. Getting out of bed after 20 minutes just made me anxious and more wired up, so ended up walking the halls all night. Tried antihistamines and Remeron - no help. Got some help with gummies, but it was not consistent. I finally got a referral to a sleep specialist (neurologist) and that was the game changer. She listened to my history and was ready to give me klonopin again. Looking back, I could see that my balance and mental clarity were better off that drug so I asked that we try something else. Lunesta is a sedative/hypnotic similar to ambien, but does not cause anxiety the next day. I have no noticeable side effects. It has not helped me stay asleep all night, but we came up with a strategy to take 2mg at bedtime and then when I wake between 2-3am, I will take 1/2 pill and drift back to sleep. For me, for now, this works well and I'm well rested the next day. The thing about a sleep specialist is, they will work with you to find out the best strategy. If you don't need something to fall asleep, there is a short acting drug called Sonata that might be good. Bottom line, get a sleep specialist. She assured me that taking something to sleep was preferable to mind and body health over not sleeping. Insomnia is no joke. Good luck.

I don't have experience with gabapentin, but Lunesta works very well for me. It calms my overactive brain so I can drift off to sleep. I would suggest a sleep specialist if you don't have one. They know how the different drugs work and will work with you to find your best solution. Good luck. (I have to take 2mg at bedtime and another 1/2 pill when I wake at 2-3am). That works great for me.

New to this group. My husband is the insomniac but it affects me as much as it does him. He has been taking a "bad" pill, temazepam, for years. He is 86 years old. It is no longer working and is giving him weird side effects. Is there any sleep aid that a senior citizen has used that works and is not extremely dangerous?

@joyceinil I have found Sleep8 from NiHealth works well for me it is all natural and I did not wake up in the morning with the typical hangover that I get when I take over-the-counter or prescription sleep medication. My doctor recommended trying it because I didn’t do well with the prescription he recommended. I will say it took about three days of taking it consistently before I began to sleep through the night. Sleep8 worked for me. Hope this helps.

Trazodone tends to work for me. I take 50mg but I've known people who take up to 150mg. My psychiatrist said Trazodone improves sleep architecture.

When Trazodone 50mg isn't enough, I'll add another 25mg. If I'm hurting need to get to sleep in a particular position or my mind is racing, I'll split a 10mg Ambien in half, take it and turn the lights out.

I agree with the people who like Lunesta. I took 3mg for probably seven years before it quit working for me. I don't call Ambien real sleep but when used PRN in conjunction with something else or when used just because one has to get up early, fast sleep is a godsend.

I took Ambien CR for several months in conjunction with Trazodone. Those two gave me some of the best sleep or my life. But Ambien CR ended up causing me bladder pain. I already have a wonky bladder so 🤷 I had to stop taking it.

I've never taken Gabapentin for sleep - I have for pain - but I see how that could help for a little while until you get used to it. It's the same with Lyrica.

I have had trouble since my 20’s and it got worse about 3 years ago, after menopause. I literally could not sleep at all and have been taking Trazodone since my early 30’s. After struggling for some time, and no MD ever suggested a sleep study, I went to a sleep specialist and was diagnosed with sleep apnea, severe! I am now on CPAP. My headaches are almost gone! I went through several sleep meds: ambien (felt disabling), Quivivic (felt horrible), and clonazepam (worked). However, I felt so sluggish the next day. I am now on Lunesta and have taken it for three nights, sleeping better! I’ve also gone through CBT-I at Mayo, which did not help my situation. I’m still on Trazodone with the Lunesta and hope to wean if possible. I hope this helps!
