What Distracts You From the Pain?

Posted by Jen, Alumna Mentor @sandytoes14, Oct 4, 2016

Hello!
We share what works (and what doesn't) for us as far as medicines and surgeries, etc.
What works for you to give yourself a little break? I'm presently researching family history from the comfort of my recliner.

Thanks. I don't have support here so I'm really looking for support here. Thanks!

I have friends who help me, take me to doctors, buy groceries, etc., but I do feel they question my pain or it's intensity and that hurts. To try to help take my mind off the pain, I play games on the computer, watch my favorite tv shows, and walk around on my walker as much as I can. and mostly pray and read the Psalms.

Hello, Sandytoes! My name is Clubohara! Distraction from pain...I make sure I have "stations" set up - I have beading, reading, coloring, puzzles, movies, etc all around the house so I can move from project to project - keeping busy, doing crafts or watching comedy keeps my mind off the pain.

Thanks for the welcome. I have a great husband, wonderful animals that calm me. Ice cream, most specifically Blue Bunny Mini ice cream cones (with caramel). I try to take my mind of of it with coloring. I started this before it became a fad.

Mine as well, set up plating lines for the first 15 years, plus keeping 6 persons with hardware to rack. I loved doing it I moved all day.....

Hi all
Exercise, particularly walking helps me. I just have to encourage myself to 'get going'. If my day isn't really bad, my grandchildren help as well.

Currently nothing distracts me from pain on any level. Why see a pain specialist who lives in fear of prescribing narcotics and tells me to walk. The mental health therapist tells me there is nothing she can do for physical pain-talk to my PC who then refers me to a pain specialist. Ridiculous!!! Why see any of them???? Okay, in a very negative place and do not want to be. I have done everything I know to do and now have no options left!!!
Anyone understand???????????????????

Yes, I understand you. I just saw a pain dr, my GP, a phychologist and my gastrologist for my terrible pain, which originates from bone spurs and arthritis
in my neck. The surgeons do not want to touch it, so they all tell me, live with it and take opioids. They help, but they have so many negative sides.
Make me tired all day, no appetit, no interest in friends and family any more and there is no one to help me to get off them. Wean yourself off slowly or sign yourself into a clinic for 39,000.00 for four weeks.
I have been living with my pain in the head now for years. Now I have digestion pain, caused by constipation. Been to the ER several times, when I got scarred, because it also effected my heart.
So I can feel for you very much!
But my husband and I will not give up. This is no way to live, if there must be a way to treat this pain!

@edda So very true are your words. Have DDD of the neck and lumbar, twisted pelvis, OA (yes, and bone spurs), fibromyalgia, and ferocious TMJ which can cause terrible headaches. No one wants to prescribe narcotics and although not a fan it would be a relief at times. OTC's do nothing to help. I have done all I can as far as diet and exercise (limited). I live alone even though surrounded by neighbors and I learned the hard way to not try and make friends with those one lives in such close proximity. I would that others would not be so loud-this I can do nothing about.
Do you know what causes the head pain? Nothing much worse-especially when it goes past an ache to outright pain. I was kicked to the curb and no one believed how bad my head pain was. I finally found a TMJ specialist that saw the problem and treated it as best as he could. Only a soft diet and I do not eat gluten nor sugar. Thankful for blenders. Due to the fibro I can no longer eat anything in the Nightshade family as they cause a terrible flare...a real bummer.
I assuage myself by saying, "it could be worse" and this isn't much help either.

I'm not sure how it would work with paint on your head but I got a pain pump and a catheter up my spine and now I get by on 3 mg of Dilaudid a day instead of the 250 2 mg of assorted opiates I was taking before the pain pump. I still have pain but it's quite manageable.
