Arikayce question

Posted by lvnl @lvnl, Oct 9 9:04am

Hi, does anyone have the experience of coughing up phlegm after doing their Arikayce inhalation? I'm on week 3 of either Arikayce or placebo (in a study) along with ethambutol and Azithromycin. I do saline airway clearance before doing the Arikayce-or-placebo inhalation. I am coughing up phlegm after the arikayce-or-placebo and am wondering if that's a positive effect of the medication or if I'm coughing up the med & losing its effect! Thanks to this group for all the shared experience & insights!

You are lucky if you are coughing up phlegm because you need to get it out of your lungs. I am allergic to the ethambutol so can't take the cocktail. You probably are getting the Arikayce.

I do hope I'm getting the Arikayce! And am looking for any "signs" of that. I don't have hoarseness and the inhalation doesn't seem to irritate my throat which are common side effects.

Good morning! My Arikayce routine was to do nebulizing of albuterol, followed by saline, then do airway clearance. After that was completed, I would nebulize Arikayce. Yes, I would often have some addition mucus come up after the Arikayce. Not massive -- just basically one cough to clear it out. I did have hoarseness around week 2 but it went away in a few weeks and never came back. Hoping you are getting it as well, but either way thanks so much for participating in the trial!!

Yes, I coughed up a lot of phlegm in the first couple of months of using Arikayce. I also began producing much sputum, when prior to Arikayce, I was completely dry and could rarely produce a sputum sample.

Also, I'm curious about the trial you are participating in. Are all participants only taking the 2 antibiotics? I'm curious because I've been on 3 antibiotics for 2 years now, and I'm questioning whether I need the rifampin.

Anyhow, thank you for participating in the trial.

This is reassuring to me. I was worried I was coughing up the Arikayce/placebo.
Yes my Dr, Dr Addrizzo -Harris at the NYU BE -NTM program, runs the study , the Encore Arikayce study. Many centers are enrolled. It's studying Arikayce for newly dx patients.
She said there is good enough evidence that just the 2 antibiotics are effective so the 50% getting placebo are still being treated.

Good morning. Are getting aromatherapy because you did not respond to the antibiotic treatment or there is another reason? Thank you

Can you clarify is the Encore Arikayce and 2vs3 antibiotics 2 different studies or the same study?
I have been looking for any information about the 2vs3 study to ask my provider if I can only take 2 instead of 3.

Not the same study ... Sorry!

I'm getting Arikayce or a placebo, as part of a study of Arikayce with patients newly diagnosed with MAC/NTM. I have not been treated before this. I don't know about others on this thread.
