What helps improve osteoporosis without medication?

Posted by imatine @imatine, Dec 4, 2020

Hello, did anyone here try to heal from osteoporosis away from all the prescribed medications we all know of? Did you try following a specific diet? Excercise? Meditation, etc. ? Thank you

Yes! That’s me. I was just about to take Evenity for my Osteoporosis of the spine but I chickened out for more than one reason. I’m 62 years old so I don’t have Medicare yet. Evenity was going to cost me $2300 a month ( my insurance will only pay $300) In addition to that, I have read about the side effects and I became so worried that I was no longer sleeping. I decided to hold off on the Evenity for now. I am going to OsteoStrong and also taking a low dose estrogen cream & progesterone. I also eat right, take my supplement and exercise daily. Hoping for some improvement on my Dexascan in November 🙏🙏🙏

Hi, I am contemplating getting on something for my osteoporosis. I'm read your comment and have been considering the estrogen/progesterone. I do exercise and take supplements, but can't start on any medication yet.

Did your Dexascan show some improvement or at least did it remain stable?

Thank you

@kathleen1314, Congratulations on your improved Dexa scores!
I've read a bit about strontium citrate and will ask my doc about it at my next visit. I've not heard of bioidentical hormones so could you elaborate a bit more or provide a good site for more info on that? Thank you for your post.

Sorry I just saw this. For some reason, I was never notified of this reply.
Bioidentical hormone information probably is best investigated with a call to your local compounding pharmacy to ask for the names of drs that use bioidentical hormones in your area. That way you have access to the tests and prescriptions that go with bioidentical hormones. I do have several posts on the inspire site that can be helpful if you go there.

I track my food I try to get calcium, vitamin K magnesium, vitamin D and protein daily. I supplement 2000iu vitamin D, 100 mg K2Mk7, multivitamin. I also do strength training 3 times a week, walk 3-4 times a week, posture and impact exercises every day. Plus I just started BHRT. I won't know if this is helping my osteoporosis or not until May of 2026 when I get my next dexa scan.

Well.....not exactly to heal osteoporosis, but to improve.....yes. I eat yogurt every day, with fruit, low carbs, good protein, take daily Centrum Silver for Women, Super B Complex, D3, Zinc, Citrical or a calcium supplement. AND, I use water therapy 2-3X daily in a pool for conditioning, exercise. That is probably the best suggestion you can try, if your doctor approves. My doc said I have to do that for the rest of my life...I consider that a direct order from someone who knows me and my body and wants my best. So, I do it. I love it. I'm stronger, have less pain, move better. I walk in the water-sideways/backwards/front, do marching, use water barbells. Simple, easy and lots of hard work to feel and be better. It works wonders for me. Wishing you well!

Regarding the yogurt - do you use non-fat, 2% or the full whole milk variety? Appreciate your answer, thank you.

hi fiesty,
I don't know your age or have long you have been in menopause, which is important for bioidentical hormones; Doctors fear beginning hormones after patients have been in menopause for too many years because of the fear that plaque may have built up and then have the risk of breaking loose when hormones are restarted and arteries may become more pliable.

all people with osteoporosis need to consult an endocrinologist; there are numerous diseases and conditions which may cause or impact osteoporosis .An endocrinologist should run a wide range of tests cking the parathyroid etc.
I also believe that everyone with osteoporosis needs to consult a hormone specialist....endocrinologists seldom ck sex hormones, but a hormone specialist should ck all hormones. You may find the name of a hormone specialist who works with bioidentical hormones by calling your local compounding pharmacy; that is a pharmacy that makes medicine, including hormones, just for you individually.

Let me throw out that I do not think anyone should take a progestin, a man made progesterone, which is usually a pill taken by mouth. The WHI report that spoke to the dangers of hormones was mainly speaking about progestins.
Plus, I do not think anyone should take an estrogen without progesterone. Some doctors says you don't need the progesterone if you have had a hysterectomy, but you probably still have your breasts, and you still have the cancer risk.
Research seems to show that about 50 mg progesterone daily for at least 3 weeks a month holds protection from cancer. I use it topically and vaginally.

Obviously, I am not a doctor. What I know is gleaned from reading research papers and consulting with my own doctors. We all have to make personal decisions about what is best for us, to read the research and consult with our doctors.
Good luck my friend!

I said that 5o mg of progesterone daily works; I believe that I miskeyed, usually the amount is around 20 mg, but it is very individual and no hormone should be taken without a saliva test to check all your hormone levels. Then you doctor may prescribe the best amount for you based on your saliva test results.

@maryandnans My osteopath recommended part-skim ricotta…it is not great plain….i add some low sugar lemon-lime yogurt to sweeten it—or add pesto for vegetable dips…ricotta has the highest of all dairy calcium.( There’s some info that high oxalate foods can get in the way of calcium absorption—-but eating those foods along with foods low in oxalates can help.)
