I am just starting my treatment for MAC. I was put on Azithromycin Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for my first of the three antibiotics. After the first week I started to notice joint soreness, esp in my hands. I had itchiness on arms and hands. Then I noticed a rash and severe itching on both arms.
My Pulmonary Doctor said I had an allergic reaction. Stopped the drug and I am on a regimen of prednisone to stop the inflammation and rash.
He has changed my first antibiotic to Moxifloxacin HCL 400 mg.
Has anyone else ever had this reaction to this drug?
I had taken this Azithromycin drug before in the past and nothing like this ever occurred?
I am taking NAC and a Probiotic daily .
So far I am off to a rocky start👎

I did not do well with azithromycin. They have it listed in my chart as an allergy, but it wasn’t- just a bad, bad, tummy with it. It was substituted for clarithromycin ( Biaxin). I had no trouble with that one. That is usually the alternative drug choice. Sorry you had an issue with azithromycin. Sometimes it’s trial and error till we get the right one. (irene5)

Yes, Lynn! I have the nausea and muscle aches and itching that keeps me up all night. Today is Tuesday and haven’t slept since Friday. I know lack of sleep affects the immune system when we need it the most. I am at the end of my rope and ready to quit the meds. I have not had MAC symptoms yet just med symptoms.

If you have constant itching, liver function needs to be checked. Liver issues are a potential side effect of the Big 3; itching can be a sign of decreased liver function.
Please call your doctor.
Hi to all of you who have been diagnosed with bronchiectasis and MAC. I was just diagnosed with it as well after a bronchoscopy was done in August. I'm almost 73 and have been experiencing bouts of pneumonia at least twice a year for many years. My PCP sent me to a pulmonary specialist who finally came up with this diagnosis after the bronchoscopy. She has put me on 3 antibiotics just like all of you. I'm to take azithromycin, ethambutol and rifAMPin for the next 18 months. She has ordered blood work every month to monitor my liver and kidney functions. I have to have an EKG periodically to monitor my heart as well as periodic visits to an ophthalmologist and audiologist for eyes and hearing. I am at this point terrified of these drugs if they have the potential to damage all of my organs. Have any of you experienced severe problems with these drugs? She told me that my tears, saliva, and urine will be orange, and I may have nausea and diarrhea as well. Any words of encouragement would be most appreciated at this point.
Yes my urine is orange but at least that does not indicate damage. I have some queasiness but not diarrhea so you may not have it either. Best of luck to you. It can be frightening.

Did your pulmonary specialist also diagnose Bronchiectasis or COPD? Were you advised to use any airway clearance routines to help get the "crud" moving out of your lungs?
I always suggest that people new to our support group think about beginning with some basic reading.

Is the itching from the disease or the treatment?
I am pretty sure it's the treatment since it didn't start until after I started on the antibiotics.
