Help..What Causes Pain Behind Your Thighs???

Posted by cahnny @cahnny, Sep 5, 2016

I'm 70 and have a lot of degenerative spine and joint issues but now a new pain has cropped up. When I sit the backs of my thighs really become VERY sore/painful. It gets much better as soon as I stand up but I can't stand for long so spend a lot of time in a wheelchair or other chairs. Anyone know what could cause that kind of pain?

I'm (granny998) not in a wheelchair but at times when sitting, I get so uncomfortable that I can't stay still. If I were in a wheelchair, I'm not sure how I would survive. However, lying down, walking, or using an ice pack or heating pad helps. Just moving my legs helps some but lying down and icing works best for me.

You and I seem to be having some similar experiences and solutions...lol. I know what you mean about lady like but it's just me and my husband and he knows I'm a lady (-; usually...lol

Seriously though it just seem it solves the problem to remove any pressure against the backs of my thighs. I have tingling too. It started in my feet and works it's way up to my knees sometimes. They said it was idiopathic neuropathy. Basically a nerve issue. Then I developed something called Morton's Neuroma in my left foot. When it acts up it feels like I've got a stone under my foot between 3rd and 4th toe and those two toes are becoming somewhat deformed and the skin wants to get dry and rough. I put emu oil on them every night and that helps.

I don't know if you read my first post but I wrote a darn book...hahahaha. I was frustrated and it was the first time here. At the time I figured what the heck. No one knows me and it's a way to vent. It turned out to be a good thing. There is a lot of good advice here and very nice people. Why I mentioned it is, I wrote that I have a serious itching problem along my spine. I've discovered a cream that helps but I do believe it's a nerve issue just as the tingling in my feet and legs. It's like the brain is sending mixed messaged to the nerves or the nerves are damaged or maybe being pinched. What do I know. I'm not a doctor but that's what my body seems to be saying to me. May sound silly but I do believe our bodies talk to us if we listen. I just don't like what it's been saying lately.

By the way...tonight the barometric pressure took a major swing up and the pain was getting pretty bad. I tried that hot cold idea you mentioned. I took a hot shower and it REALLY helped relieve the pain. I know you were referring to my thighs when you suggested hot or cold but heat worked on my whole body pain too. Thanks again.

HI - has your doctor checked you out for Bursitis in your hips? I have it
in both hips from complications related to a bad fall and a broken pelvis.
The pain from my hips is often referred to my legs/thighs. Extreme
tenderness is common. I've had two steroid shots in each hip. The first one
helped a lot but the second one didn't and my doctor says I can't have
another until next year. I'm not sure I will have another since the last
one didn't help. This is just a possible suggestion. My doctor pressed on
the side of my hips and my knees buckled just from the pain from the
pressure. I had no idea my hips were causing part of my leg pain. If you
press on the side of your hips and it hurts, you could have Bursitis.
Ultasound done prior to my injections confirmed it. hope you feel better
soon.
Hi daisy girl, I also have Bursitis in my left hip with referred pain in my left knee. Very painful. Receive injection in my hip, but only lasted for four weeks. Next thing to do is physical therapy, I don't know if that is going to help.

Cahnny, I have many of your symptoms including the Morton's Neuroma. My doctor said I was lucky I didn't have to use a cane!! And he offered no advice. I investigated and found physical therapy highly recommended. I asked for and finally received six physical therapy sessions - and boy did they help. It is not "exercise" as such - walking is exercise - but it's amazing the little tricks the therapists have to help you. Please try it - if you do, you won't be any worse off than you are now. And report back. I too feel better standing than sitting - I'd love a Winston Churchill stand-up desk!!!

When my butt and back of my thigh hurts, I sometimes put a tennis ball under my "cheek". It sometimes relieves the pain but it might just swap the pain.
Sorry you are having such pain.
GrannyJ

Just tried the tennis ball to see how it would feel. Sorreeeeeeeee...it's not for me. There must be nerves in your butt because I got pinched nerve pain from my shoulder to my elbow. Get that a lot but the tennis ball pressed the wrong stuff...lol. Thanks anyway.

I just went through an Angiolplasty procedure because, though I have competed for the last 6 years in 5k's - in the 70+ groups, I could no longer do it because the artery in my left leg was clogged right behind my replaced knee. I had the procedure last Friday (5 days ago) and am thrilled with the results!
Maybe you have a clogged artery or vein in your thigh. Have you checked for that? My Primary Care physician recommended that I I see a vascular surgeon who performed the procedure.
Good Luck!
