Has anyone had surgery for Apical Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy?

I am 34. I was on camzyos for a year. It didn’t work for me. Then last year I had a septal myectomy. I was ok for awhile but now my gradient is back up to 50. Supposedly, I still have thickness in the lower, more narrow part of the left ventricle. Doctors in Houston do not want to operate on me. They said it is too difficult to work in that area. My doctor is reaching out to the Mayo Clinic because they have done it for the past 10 years. Does anyone know of this procedure or have you had it performed?

I just had surgery at the Mayo Clinic performed by Dr. Dearani. He took off 10x more than than was taken by my Dr. a year earlier during my septal myectomy. I have a zero gradient!

From what I recall my thickening was in that location and I had surgery a year ago in March. (at Toronto General Hospital, Dr Ralph Edwards who specializes in that type of surgery) My shortness of breath is gone although I do often seem overly tired. I just did a 48 hour Holter monitor and another Echo at my cardiologists office but my follow up appt isn't until October.

Same zero gradient was my outcome, too! YAY! Extra hug to you for your determination and courage to undergo a septal myectomy twice! I believe we communicated on this blog a while ago, I am so glad you decided to follow up and that you ended up at a Center of Excellence (COE) for HCM. Wishing you a sustained, rapid and happy recovery from the surgery! (PS I had Dr. Schaff, I hear yours and mine are two of the many, many true experts at Mayo for heart care.)

Thank you for your encouraging message. I don’t know how I had the courage to walk the steps. go to Rochester and do the same surgery at exactly the same time. I am not brave and am still recovering. I hope I will have good outcomes. Thus far- 0 gradient-very tired, and suffering from pstd.

Hi Superkhal and Hpboss84! Once the small incision healed, I found that there was little to learn to cope with. I cannot hold babies close on that side - presses down uncomfortably - and need to remember to not turn tightly to the right. At airports, I tell TSA about it and I get screened differently depending on the specific equipment available. Other places where screening takes place (theaters, museums etc), I am told to walk around the screening area without further ado; this 78 year old lady must look nonthreatening. Going to the gym, the cardiovascular workouts are much less intense and still do weights. I look at the ICD as my constant monitoring buddy.

Oh ok so under Professor Perry Elliott I assume? I am under Guys and St Thomas’ under Professor Gerry Carr White. Finally it turns out I need a mitral valve repair as thickening very small 1.6 mms hence why camyzos didn’t work. I do have a very high gradient though of 99/111. How are you?
