Oral lichen Planus: What home remedies or medications help you?

Posted by lovebug61 @lovebug61, Apr 4, 2019

Anyone in the group suffer from Oral Lichen Planus. I am at my wits end with all these erosive sores in my mouth. I've had two biopsies , one in the inside cheek and one under the side of my tongue. The spot under the tongue is extremely sore to touch and has been for over a year. It scares me because the soreness never goes away, sometimes it isn't as sore but nothing helps. Any home remedies for this dreadful condition?

I first got diagnosised with LP. My dermatologist did a biopsy and said it was not LP but it was similar. It is Plasma Cell Mucositis! He put me on cortisone for3 months and then cellcept and tacrolimus. They say only 85 know people have this. Sorry I'm writing on your feed it's just nobody responded to my question and about PCM. If anyone has any comments please let ne know. I was diagnosised 1 1/2 years ago. It doesn't seem to getting better at all. My new dentist want even clean my teeth. He wants me to see Perodonti so he can do laser cleaning because my gums are so red and inflamed. Please help. I'm desperate.

@opeggisu1 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! I’m so sorry that a miserable condition brought you here. I posted an item from Cleveland Clinic that has some helpful things you can do at home for your mucositis.

I remember when I got mucositis after getting chemo. Wow, my mouth hurt! But I remembered the salt and soda rinse from my days as a cancer nurse. Take a cupful of clean water (you can use sterile or bottled water from the store) and stir in equal part of salt and soda. Then rinse your mouth carefully. Do this 4-6 times a day. If you read through all of the discussion, you will find quite a few self-help tips.
Did the dentist give you any idea of where the mucositis came from?

Could you elaborate? Do you dilute the extract in water and swish, or what?

One thing that has provided me with short term relief from severe mouth pain caused by Oral Lichen Planus is something my dermatologist refers to as “magic mouthwash.” This swish and spit mouthwash is a compounded product made to order by the pharmacy. The four medications it includes are Lidocaine, GNP antacid, Nystatin and Diphenhydram. It is called “Diphen-Lido-Maalox-Nyst Oral Suspension” and the directions are to swish and spit 2 teaspoonfuls four times a day. You keep it in the fridge so it is cold when you use it. I would swish for two minutes and then spit. I got a lot of temporary relief from this.

The other thing that helped a great deal was changing my toothbrush to the softest bristle I could find. I also use a kid’s toothpaste with floride. After much experimenting, I found Crest’s Sparkle Fun which has the floride I need and is very neutral in flavor and not minty. I found that if I brushed every time and very soon after eating, removing all contact with food from my mouth was very helpful in reducing new blisters and soothing old ones.

I hope you feel better soon!

Thank you so much for your response. They have no idea how i got it. They sent me to a dermatologist and he did a biopsy and said it was Plasma Cell Mucositis. They said only 85 know people have it. It's very frustrating. They just don't know enough about it. I took steroids and now I have been taking cellcept for over a year and tacrolimus. My mouth is still inflamed. I will try the salt and soda.

Thank you. I will ask the doctor about the mouthwash. I think my brother used that when he had sores in his mouth from his cancer. I will try the Sparkle toothpaste.

I totally understand. I have had OLP for 10 years. I have been using clobatedol ointment and sometimes tacrolimus ointment to sores 2 times daily but my gums have started bleeding and my dentist advised to stop the steroid ointments so I am looking for home remedies. I am trying coconut oil right now but have just started it. Thanks

I know how you feel. I have been on topical steroids for over 10 years and now I have to stop them since my gums are bleeding so bad. I am looking for any help I can get. I am currently using salt water rinses. Also trying coconut oil 2 x daily. Any other suggestions? Thanks
