Bariatric or Gastrectomy (stomach removal) surgery due to ulcers or?
Has anyone had Bariatric or Gastrectomy (stomach removal) surgery due to ulcers or other health problems excluding cancer?
Any thoughts or suggestions? It looks like it will take 6 months to heal and will never be able try or eat or drink the same again.

I imagine you have tried many things to treat ulcer if gastrectomy is being considered. Bariatric surgery is a type of gastrectomy. Difference is for reason, bariatric surgery is for weight loss where gastrectomy is done due other medical reasons.
I had a Gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y) so was left with a small pouch. It also included a long recovery time while everything healed. I actually developed a small ulcer in pouch few years after surgery, but it healed after medications.
This article from Cleveland Clinic has information on gastrectomy:

There are a couple discussions in Digestive Health on subject, though some of them were due to cancer, there experience may help.

I'm tagging @cyberkitty who had procedure few years ago due to bleeding ulcers and may be able to give advice.
Are you in the investigation phase or have surgery scheduled?
Hi,
Please let me add that not all Bariatric surgeries are for weight loss!!!
I had for Gerds and reflux for 25 years and 3 failed surgies. Obesity is not the only reason for Bariatrics
I believe it is gastric bypass. Bariatric the word means relating to or specializing in the treatment of obesity. You are, however; correct this type of surgery is done for various reasons.
I had bariatric surgery 15+ years ago. It was done Laproscopic. Healing was a breeze. Up the same day. I realize there could be other issues for needing surgery. Of course I don’t know your situation, but, eventually you’ll be able to eat pretty much what you want. If you follow all the guidelines from your Doctor/Nutritionist you’ll be fine. Slow at first. Experiment with different foods as you go along. The only thing I definitely excluded from my diet was any type of diet sodas/drinks (no more artificial sweeteners for me). Chew, chew, chew. I have an occasional drink, usually wine. Research for the best health care team as possible. It makes all the difference in the world. Good luck.
I had a bad cough for a few weeks. One day it turned to vomiting and diarrhea(blood). I passed out on the bathroom floor. My wife found me a couple hours later. I was rushed to hospital, they found an a ulcer through a gastro but said it had stopped bleeding.
A couple of days later it started to bleed again and The did a total Gastrectomy(this happen in last couple of weeks)
I was after advise about recovery, eating etc.
Thanks

Wow, what an emergency situation.
Did your provider / surgeon give you any advice on post op diet? I am guess it would be similar to post bariatric surgery diet. Very liquid with gradually adding food.
Important to make sure you get protein, many people after bariatric surgery have problems mainiting protein. Protein shakes might be an option.
You might ask surgeon to refer you to a nutritionist about post op diet.
How is recovery going?
Hi Laurie,
It seems the post op diet are similar. Vitamin B12, C and D Will be very important. I will probably need to have B12 injections monthly. I currently have a feeding tube and will have that for. 6 weeks.
I go home from hospital today.
Thanks for your support.
@pain3relie
So glad your going home. I do B12 injections every 21 days, plus C, D and iron supplements.
Check with insurance on B12 injections, they should be cover as medically necessary. If not, check GoodRx coupon.
Are you able to take anything orally for next 6 weeks?
I am able to eat very soft food. Mashed vegetables etc, I can eat ice cream, yogurt, custard, jellies ete . I take all my medications orally.
I take multivitamins and are looking into B12 injections.
