Research on COVID 19 vax causing Essential Thrombocythemia?

Posted by dressler02 @dressler02, Jul 2, 2022

I’ve seen very little about what causes a genetic corruption that leads to iessential Thrombocythemia. However i’ve been going back and acquiring past blood tests to try and pinpoint a timeline. One thing that seems to keep constant is that my changes in blood measurements did not seem to happen until after my first J&J shot for Covid 19 vaccination. I know the J&J shot had some bad press about causing a rare blood clot in mostly females. That does seem to have some minor relevancy. However, When i ask my Cancer clinic they seem to disregard it as just bad luck and say there are no known studies on it. However something had to cause the gene to corrupt. I cannot find any research on it. Does anyone know any studies in correlation to blood disorders and say the J&J shot? Or any other vaccinations causing this corruption of genetics or any other identified causes?

Thank you,

DJ

Here is one research paper on increased platelets with mild covid, but decreased platelets with severe covid infection. There are other paper in ResearchGate and links in this paper. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34695854/

Thanks! This study looks at platelets and clots in "normal" people. It's not clear whether platelets in those of us with ET or other MPNs will respond the same way.

Confusing the matter is that a few people are running to ET groups claiming that covid (or the vaccine) gave them cancer/ET when, in fact, their platelet rise is temporary.

That can happen when the doc isn't clear and/or a patient runs to Dr Google for info.

I took two Moderna and a Pfizer booster. Subsequently, lymphocytes and platelets dropped below normal range and never recovered. I then got Covid and they dropped even lower. Doctors monitored until May 2024 gave official diagnosis of Splenic Marginal Zone Lymphoma. Before vaccines my labs were normal. I was health conscious 56 year old fit woman. Now on “watch & wait”. My best friend got four shots, she now how APS. Maybe coincidence.

Getting covid and LC last year, and associated vaccines didn't influence my platelet (or other CBC) levels, but my having MGUS (8 years) does decrease them. Covid sickens people, and for some can trigger autoimmune and other diseases/symptoms. What came first? Covid, and/or did it reveal other problems? I have celiac disease because I caught H1N1 flu almost 15 years ago which triggered my HLA-DQ8 haplotype and tied autoimmune response. ResearchGate is a one source for research publications. I'm a retired research scientist (not medicine), but even I get Dr. Google responses from doctors. Under Obama, a law was passed such that all federal govt funded research has to be made available to the public. If one knows what to search for, a lot is being published on covid and other diseases.

I had ET 3 years before covid.....I've had 6 shots/boosters and my platelet count has remained steady over last 3 years
In fact a week after my second shingles shot, my platelets went down dramatically, causing concern with Dr......so then had to have more frequent blood tests and slowly platelets returned to pre-shingles shot levels....There is a research paper that talks about shingles shot and effect on platelets.....

I have used that and the NIH portal. had to look up a lot of terms, but my hours in the tutoring center overlapped with the prof who did biology tutoring, so I could ask him questions when we weren't helping students. There is a lot of good info out there if people browse reputable sites.

I agree. I was diagnosed with ET in January 2023. I never had an issue with high platelets until I had 2 Covid vaccines.
I never had Covid that I am aware of. What groups do you belong to?

Good morning Christinele…I was diagnosed with ET in Feb.2018, just before Covid, so I can’t connect my ET with Covid. My Hemo doctor said I probably had for a while before it was found.
I take Hydroxyea 5 days a week and have a few issues like fatigue, headaches and itchiness, but the alternative is worse than taking the drug……..good luck…….Claire
