Weird intermittent quick inhale/exhale at random intervals
It rarely happens more than once in any giver hour but has been going on for weeks. I researched respiratory illnesses but couldn't find anything. Anyone have a clue what this might be?

Hi, I have had the same intermittent quick breath intake for the past few months, but it seems to be getting better. I think, for me, it is associated with the lung surgery that I had in May.
I am new to this forum and just found this. I started having intermittent breathing when I was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2023. My pulmonologist said it may be part of the disease but he didn’t really have an answer. At first it was unsettling but I have gotten used to it when it happens and just go on about my day. I also involuntarily make a funny noise from my throat when I have this, so I just make a joke about it and move on. I guess it’s part of my journey with this condition. Blessings to all of you.
I have COPD and have experienced the same thing for years….my airway hiccup! It happens randomly, no physiological effect so I’ve just ignored it..
Thanks! I like your name for it! Take care.
You describe it perfectly. Everyone thinks I am gasping out of shock or my hiccup got cut off. I recently was diagnosed with a Pulmonary Embolism and Atelectasis.
I have had the same thing since March. I agree with another description that it’s like the first half of a hiccup. I’ve not had an event like surgery or a neck or chest injury. It rarely happens more than once an hour. Episodes happen hours apart.
I have these on occasion and feel it is relatively benign...as it does not make me feel any different ie, faint, light-headed etc. Think it may just be a broncho-spasm....kinda like an airway hiccup. Mention it to your provider for an FYI next time you see them. But if it causes no distress don't worry. Just my opinion!
This is why I depend on this site so much. I also have random “airway hiccups” and didn’t think much of them. But it’s reassuring to know others experience them and they’re mostly harmless. Mine started after Covid and my previously well-controlled asthma flared up.
It does go away. I also had lung surgery.
I am 52 years old and this is all new to me yesterday I was eating lunch and the food made my stomach queasy so I started having the urge to vomit so as I was vomiting and regurgitating the food up I could not breathe so I kept throwing up and kept throwing up and in between I was trying to also catch my breath and it was I was violently throwing up then and then I was able to finally burp and I was able to catch my breath but every since then every now and then I periodically take a deep breath now and my chest is aching from the vomiting because I was vomiting violently like it was trying to push everything up and out I have never experienced this before I didn't know that vomiting will cause me to have this intermittent breathing problem
