I've had 2 hair follicle tests, and a fingerprint test in the last 6 months. I've also had numerous urine tests. I pass all urine tests, but fail hair follicle and fingerprint tests. I never have used meth. but thats what i keep testing positive for on hair and fingerprint tests. I don't use any medications. I have a habit of sucking on cough drops, and I smoke menthol cigarettes. I also have 2 pilar cysts on my head. Any ideas on what can be causing false positives. I'm at a loss. And on probation, so there probably going to send me to jail for something I'm not doing.
Thank you for your help.
The Lawyer wants a support letter from a professional who can confirm that Metformin can result in false positive tests for methamphetamine. He suggested our MD or pharmacist but they won't put their signature to a support letter for "privacy reasons"??
We have shown him the internet pages from Pubmed but he wants a name to the letter.
These days you have to be careful I was renting a room with so called friends and I found out that my drink had been tampered with more than a few times I'm livid to this day but now I am super vigilant
Best of luck
I recently have done some research on this subject. If the dr or pharmacist has told you they are aware of this but will not do a letter to support such then ask your lawyer if you can supeona them and show them the articles from known medical authorities and ask there knowledge or even opinion. Just saying that’s what I would do. Maybe the information sheet the pharmacist
Puts with each prescription when you purchase it would have a detailed in depth fact sheet about the medication or ask them to
Print you one. I’m currently researching for a friend a there is a lengthy list of medications that can give false positives. Over the counter medicines as well as prescription medication also. Like Vick’s vapor inhaler or trazodone, any cold medication basicly they have an antihistamine or decongestant that could test positive. Certain antidressants I found a list on drugs.com. I just done search after search wording it different ways each time. It’s alot of reading but who knows it might help.
Is that based on a quick dip test or are you going to or are they sending to an actual lab? It's not real uncommon to get a false positive on a dip if you are on Adderall. It should be going to a lab for sure. They can determine and rule out the meth OR confirm if it's really there. If it tests positive there...well, I don't know what to tell you.
BTW, I am a Licensed drug counselor.
Yet, It is documented that there are many medications that can give a false positive for amphetamines and methamphetamines in the lab, not just on a dip stick.
Thank you for your reply and the helpful information. My Lawyer says he wants a support letter from the prescribing doctor or pharmacist whom I get my Metformin from. But they won't due to some privacy problem. So that's why I've come to you. I think my Lawyer basically wants someone who knows about this situation to just say that they know Metformin can give false positives. He won't accept the webpages, not even the one from Pubmed. It is frustrating.
That just doesn't seem right to me what is happening to you. The place that does the testing would be aware that this happens, and maybe they could go back and check the test for metformin so at least you can show that you are positive for the drug you're stating you take. Then if it shows that you are also positive for meth again on a 2nd test it will back more of what you're saying.

I think it would be the menthol cigarettes and if the cough drop is an antihistamine. Vicks vapor inhaler will cause a false positive. It makes no sense when it's documented that this happens when taking these. They should allow you to go off whatever it is causing the false positive and take another test. They should go off prior tests and the numbers should be low if you aren't really using the drug.

Ok thank you for the advice. For some reason, the pharmacist doesn't want to put his name on a short support letter, due to privacy issues??
