Posted by kareem @kareem, Jan 25, 2023

I was a normal man until got ill with covid19 2021 after i recovered i found my platelets 130000 then 122000 after taking the vaccine. I went to doctor who made me to take B12 and folic acid until platelets became 150000. The problem that after i got influenza vaccine and titanous vaccine after injury platelets became 112000 !!!! Again starting taking B12 and folic acid , it became 120000 and i bought b12 from Puritan pride and still take b12. The question is there any problem with that??

My platelets go as low as 7 I have to get platelets at least once a week and my hemoglobin is about 8 to 9 I also get blood once a week . My doctor is trying to find out what is causing this. He is treating me for aplastic anemia , not sure if that is the problem. Wish we could get an answer to this problem. Sylvia

I wish I could give you some of my platelets! Mine are running 500 plus up to 800. As far as the hemoglobin, mine, when this all started was around 5 -6. I couldn't even take a little bag of trash to the curb without stopping to lean against the house as I was so fatigued. Oncologist said I had MDS. I was given Revlimid (a mere $19,000) a month. It took years for my hemoglobin to get up to 12/15 but it finally did and it stayed. Then I was told I no longer had MDS but now my platelets are sky high and they won't come down and stay down. I'm on 2 different meds that make me feel awful. The doctor has no other help for me. A stroke or heart attack are in my future with the high platelets. Let us know what happens.

Thank you for your comments, I go to the cancer center Monday, Wednesday and Friday to get my blood drawn and get blood or platelets if my numbers are low. I was on on one med but the side effects were so bad the Dr took me off of it. I hope you can get some help.

I guess I will quit complaining as I get a blood draw every two weeks. Just went on line to get today's results of my blood drawn and platelets are mid 500's. I keep hoping for a miracle to get off these 2 meds that make me feel bad but at least I don't have spend a lot of my time in the hospital 3 times a week getting draws like you. Wonder if your doctor could try Revlimid to get your hemoglobin up.

By the way, there is funding for a lot of these meds....Good Day, etc. The doctor's nurses at the hemotology clinic did all the work and found me help. What a life saver!

Hi Kareem, I found these articles for you.
The first is regarding foods which can help increase your platelets; Vitamin C in citrus fruits being one of them.
https://www.healthgrades.com/right-care/blood-conditions/8-things-that-can-increase-your-blood-platelet-count.
Also, an article from the National Institute of Health regarding, “Nutritional zinc increases platelet reactivity”
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1951315/
Zinc is an important element in our diets and usually we consume enough daily for cellular activity. Taking too much as a supplement can have some unpleasant side effects.

Just to give you a little more information on zinc, this article was informative.

Hi,

My husband recently had his CBC testing done and found out that his platelet count is 120000. His platelets have been in the range of 130000-120000 since 2022. He doesn't have any other symptoms. He has scheduled an appointment with Hematologist. He also had covid in June 2022. Do you think his platelet count can go up with supplements?

Welcome to Connect, @akshatajoshi15. With ‘normal’ platelet values generally reading between 150,000 and 450,000 platelets per microliter, your husband’s level of 120,000 is a little outside the lower end of that window. There can be a number of causes for low platelets including infections, medications or underlying medical conditions. I know the instinct would be to try and raise that level naturally.

However, he has an appointment with a hematologist, a doctor who specializes in blood conditions. It would be better if there were no changes in your husband’s diet or medications (including supplements) before that appointment so that the doctor can run tests and do a fair assessment without having any new variables tossed in. The hematologist will most likely order specific blood tests in effort to help narrow down the potential cause for your husband’s decrease in platelets.
The doctor will be the best person to go over any potential treatments to help reverse the lower platelet level. Does that make sense?

There’s a great discussion in the forum on how to have a successful appointment with a new specialist that you might find helpful:
Your Tips on How to Get Off to the Best Start with a New Specialist

Personally, I’ve found out that having a little notepad along (or on your phone) with my questions listed in order helped me keep on track with the conversation I wanted to have with my doctors. My husband was along to take notes as well. Our time with doctors is so limited it helps if we’re prepared going in.

Can you think of any specific questions you’d like to ask his new doctor?
