Minor aunt taking nephew to appointment

I am 17 and my sister asked me to take my 8 year old nephew to his well child visit since she can’t and neither can his father. Is this allowed?

Hi @xzla, You’re a very special auntie to take responsibility for your little nephew with his healthcare. But that puts you in a tight spot.
From what I’m understanding most medical professionals will require some type of authorization from the parent, if they aren’t present at the appointment, before administering medical treatment to a minor child.

Only parents and legal guardians have the legal right to make medical decisions on behalf of children. While you can certainly take a child to the doctor, the doctor may refuse to treat your nephew unless you have written permission. It doesn't matter if the accompanying adult is a sibling, grandparent, aunt, licensed caretaker or a friend – if you're not there, the doctor will likely want to see some kind of authorization before treating your nephew.

I’m not a lawyer but I checked in with my son-in-law on the legalities of this. He mentioned that there might be form templates online for instances like this but that they’d need to be filled out, signed by the parent and notarized.

What you might do is have one of the parents call the doctor’s office to see what they say about this. You may be able to take him but if there are medical decisions to be made his doctor would have to call his mom or dad….might be an option. This is a wellness check so there might not be any medical decisions to be made at the appointment.
Good luck on the appointment. I’d be interested to hear how this all plays out. Will you let me know, please?
