A 2nd Lymph Node Biopsy after Lumpectomy?

Posted by foreverfaithful0925 @foreverfaithful0925, Jul 22 12:06pm

Hello, I was recently diagnosed with DCIS Stage 0 ER+ in May 2024.

I just had my lumpectomy on July 11, still bruised but otherwise ok and moving as normal as I can.

This journey has been overwhelming, to say the least. I am 42 with 2 young boys 13 and 8. The hardest part for me was telling my kids. But I got over that and was not as hard as I thought it would be.

I am trying to take it day by day. It’s overwhelming and sometimes just too much to overthink.

Just a few minutes ago the nurse called me and said I am scheduled again for surgery but a lymph node biopsy on July 30. I will be having a follow up appointment this week, July 24 with the surgeon to discuss my pathology results. I’m scared of not knowing what is going to happen. And confused as to why I need another biopsy when they already did a lymph node biopsy (I had a mass) which the result was benign. Has anyone had this experience before? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Do you know if your margins were clear after the lumpectomy?
I had to have an re-excision surgery because my margins were not clear enough after the lumpectomy surgery.
Maybe that could be why?

No not yet, that is what the discussion will be for tomorrow.
I’m praying for the best, and also psyching myself to accept whatever the results are tomorrow. It is what it is, and all I can do is pray to God, and trust that He will help me get through this with the help of the drs.

Went to see the surgeon today, pathology results came out. Instead of the cancer cells in situ (in place, has not gone outside), they found some that are invasive. So now I have Invasive Ductal Carcinoma.

I will be doing Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy next Tuesday. They want to see if the IDC has spread through my lymph nodes (even though preliminary biopsy showed my lymph node mass was benign). Please include me in your prayers that the SLNB comes out negative.

All other margins are clear. Praise God!

Been emotional last 2 days, but today with the Dr I was calm, and my husband was with me. God must have said, one day at a time, I got you.

sounds like this is very early discovery. I had similar events. Lymph node had only 1 involvement. Good luck and healing wishes sent.

Thank you, I am somehow taking this as a silver lining that it is caught early. May I ask what your treatment plan was?

I also was told it was in situ but now is Invasive and now will be getting a Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy Oct 17. I have my pre-op on Oct 2. Please pray for me that there are no nodes that are cancerous. I see a few posts later someone posted where may be helpful to check out so I will look at those too. How did your Sentinel Node Biopsy turn out?
