Excessive and abnormal sleep on Mirtazapine and Trazodone

Posted by leehil @leehil, Jul 15 11:06am

My 24yo son was prescribed 50mg Trazodone in addition to taking 7.5MG Mirtazapine. He is not able to go to sleep until early hours of the morning (4-6am) then sleeps for 12+ hours. Even setting an alarm does not roust him from sleep. He's tried adjusting his sleep without success. We've talked about him applying for a sleep study but I'm not sure that is needed and am curious if one or combination of meds is causing this sleep issue.

Is he working with a sleep med dr and/or sleep therapist? That has made a world of difference for me.

I plan to do a sleep study but wonder what they actually learn that can help.

I tried the at home one but I must have rolled over or something so it shut
off and I have to try it again.

I take one Seroquel(50mg) for sleep. If i do not take it i will toss and turn and may be exhausted enoug to fall asleep at 4 or 5 o'clock in the AM! Sucks!

Have your son get the genesight test to see which medicines might not work for him. Most insurances will cover all but $300. It is well worth it!

I would def get him into a sleep study. Have your Dr. call if you need a referral for it . May have sleep 💤 Apnea or some other sleeping disorder.
I take 10 mg Ambien ( split in two ), it usually only keeps me asleep 3 hrs so I take before bed at 8:30 pm and midnight .
I still wake up every 2/3 hrs but most of time I can fall back til 6:30 am .
I took Mirtazapine for 6 months during day ( it’s an antidepressant).
I have 7 major chronic digestive disorders 11 years and they wipe me out so bad that I have Chronic Fatigue syndrome now .
Not one day off from it .
Ruins your life .
It’s ama ing he’s sleeping 💤 sound for 12 hrs after he finally gets to sleep at 4 am or so .
What is he up doing until that time of the morning?
Does he go to college or work ?
He’s so young to have such issues.
I hope sleep study helps .
