Do You Need Skin Removal Surgery due to weight loss?

Posted by celia16 @celia16, Mar 23 7:27am

I’m interested in hearing from those who either have had skin removal surgery, due to substantial weight loss or feel they may need it in the future. I have lost 70 pounds so far and have 20-30 pounds to go….and I’m seeing loose skin that is bothersome. I’ve heard that for those over 50, it’s more problematic. I’m thrilled with my weight loss, but the skin is something I don’t I can tolerate.

Does insurance cover it? Hmmm….any information from those who have had it is appreciated. (Full disclosure, I haven’t had bariatric surgery, but this forum seems like the right place for the discussion.)

I had my surgery 18 years ago, and 3 years ago I did skin surgery for my arms and a tummy tuck. I’m in my 60’s, and I couldn’t stand the loose skin anymore. Insurance did not cover it, because, it was considered cosmetic surgery. It was a little pricey, but, the only regret that I have, is that I didn’t do it sooner. (Had my arms done first, then the next year I did the tummy tuck). Good luck.

Thanks for sharing. I had a lower face lift few years ago as result of weight loss and genetics. Every women in my family have what I call "turkey neck". Like you, I do not regret.

I worked hard all my life, and decided I needed to reward myself. I was in mid 60s when had done.

I had gastric lap and in 2008. Went from 320 to 165 now skin removal was never even a consideration until the skin under the drapery was getting infected. Plastic surgeon did 360 degree lift to remove skin. Woke up from surgery with 4 drains for about a week. Insurance was forced to pay because it was for medical reasons. They initially denied it but was force to pay after
My appeal to my State insurance board If you are getting infections it’s important to document all Dr appts

Oh my. That’s incredible. It sounds like you are pleased.

Did your doctor monitor your muscle mass as you lost weight?

I get comments a lot since I lost so much weight since last year. I am now down 87 pounds. A neighbor recently inquired from a family member about my drastic loss, saying she is so skinny. Lol. Made me laugh a little, since I’m not quite at goal weight, but substantially smaller than last year at this time.

There’s so much going in in my life right now. Still, I fantasize getting my body the way I want.

In2016, eight years after band, it started to cut through my esophagus. Band was removed and converted to RNY Bypass tons of adhesions and several blockages
It’s still worth it to be thin after a lifetime of being fat

Man, that’s intense. Glad you were able to recover. Hope all is well now.

I prefer being thin too. I feel so much better and have all the energy I need. I never feel as if I’m too tired to do something. That means a lot. Despite my health issues, I still feel really good overall.

How would you describe your surgery recovery and how many did you have?

I had my arms done first. Not much pain had to wear compression garments. Around $11,000.00

Tummy tuck. Again compression garments plus 1 drain. Tolerable. Healing was a little slow since I was doing too much. Around $9,000.00.

The only regret, was, that I didn’t do it sooner.
