Wait time pre-transplant?

Posted by lonnecka @lonnecka, 3 days ago

Once a person is referred to Mayo by their doctor for a transplant & that person speaks with Mayo on the phone… How long is the estimated wait time for the next step? We’ve been waiting almost 3 weeks since initially speaking to them. I thought they got back to you pretty fast.

Scheduling a pre-transplant evaluation can take awhile. It should help having a local Dr. making a referral. Perhaps your Dr. could send a reminder. What organ do you need? If you are in need of a kidney have you started looking for a willing living kidney donor? Potential living kidney donors also need to have pre-transplant evaluation. It isn’t exactly a quick process.

@lonnecka Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect.

I am only familiar with kidney transplant, but you might find some relatable information here. First, your transplant center [Mayo] will look at the referral and the underlying kidney issue, to make it is under control. Diabetes and high blood pressure are the two top reasons for kidney failure. Also, they are going to look at other comorbidities, to check to see if there is any issue that might preclude being evaluated. There may need to be input from a specialist connected to the transplant center. And, yes, it all takes time.

Reach out to your transplant coordinator, and ask them for a timeline. They will know all too well how anxious a patient can be!

I thought I originally put that in there. It’s for a liver transplant. We asked about a living donor but they’re more interested in a cadaver donor.

Good day. It does take a while to get the liver consult. I think I waited about six weeks. If you are applying to Mayo Jacksonville, they do not do living donor liver transplants. Mayo Rochester does. Regardless of what you decide, you will get top notch care at a transplant center. Best of luck to you.

Hi there,

The best advice I can give you is to get all the homework completed. The more Mayo has to consider, the faster they can make a decision to bring you in for testing. I would also not belive that everything Mayo requested was sent and received. Follow up with your other doctors to make sure everything is sent and confirm with your manging nurse at Mayo that they received them. I treated this like it was my job until I was listed, and beyond.

I hope this helps!

Hi

I don't know if a diagnosis was made! If so, they typically follow up very quickly.

@lonnecka, I agree with all of the comments that members have already shared. I will add my thoughts that it is okay to call or contact your assigned nurse manager to inquire about it. It is entirely possible that outside records have not yet arrived from your local facility.

I know that 3 weeks can feel like an eternity while waiting. In the meantime, do you have any concerns or questions as you prepare for your initial visit with liver tranaplant department? Which Mayo location will you be going to?

No questions, thank you. We’ve contacted the Mayo Clinic & they said they’ll be getting back to us within 5 days.

We will be going to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. We were already told that we need to live within 20 minutes of there.

Thank you to everyone that has replied to my post. It does seem like forever & we were beginning to think that we wouldn’t hear back from them any time soon.
