Tymlos causing belly fat?

Posted by kaa1 @kaa1, Jun 3 6:23pm

I’m on Tymlos for about 2 1/2 months now. I’m not usually concerned about my weight. I stay pretty stable. I’ve noticed that my belly seems to be getting fatter. Has anyone experienced this belly fat situation from Tymlos? Is there anything I can do about it? Why is it happening? Thanks for any input.

I am sorry you are sad about this! I empathize! but I have to be honest and tell you I laughed out loud when I read your trainer's response! What's your age? (middle or geriatric) are you post menopause and how long? I used to drink a lot of cocktails and enjoy my wine accompaniment with my cooking and I had a 22" waist and after childbirth (31) it probably went to 24" Now it is 34"! I am a little person so I struggle. My bras are 34" back! fortunately I am a DD so there is a difference but gravity makes it look pretty bad. haha. I am 67. I stopped injecting into my tummy because I didn't know what else. And I started my LCarnitine (which is a metabolizer) and do arm/waist stretching in the morning and it REALLY is helping after 1 week! My love handles are going down and look much better so I feel better about myself.
Your trainer is probably a little correct - why? because when we are young our triglycerides (which is what alcohol is) metabolize as a carb (and are utilized for energy). When we are older it metabolizes like a fat. (and is stored). So maybe that was the perspective the trainer had? You should ask! I'd be curious to know! I just thought of that! (I had nutritional chemistry at SDSU 40 years ago). Don't be depressed if you can help it... get out and get those endorphins stimulated. You always have us. we'll love you midriff and all!

Thanks for your insight. Reading these notes is helpful, but a little depressing especially to people who care about staying healthy and strong. I am 70 and been challenging myself to keep moving. None of that has changed, but now with the rolls around my belly, I have decided to invest in SPANX.!! Never have I felt so rolly polly as now. It doesn't sound like quitting Tymlos is the way to go either. Does anyone have any knowledge of what happens to the belly fat once you are off of the drug? That would be good to know. Does the fat go away?

Yeah, I don’t think quitting is the way to go either. If you get too depressed maybe you can quit for a couple weeks and see. I quit for one month after doing it for a month. Like I said when I went back I didn’t inject in my tummy. Whether it is not injecting in my tummy or the LCarnitine, or both, I don’t know, but after 2 weeks I am looking better. I had quite a bit of bloat - all over, which has also dissipated. Doctors nurse said side effects magically disappear after 8 weeks. If they told Ms menopausal women a side effect was a big gut no one would probably start it! 😊 talk to your doctor if it really bothers you. .

I have been taking 40 mcg of Tymlos for almost 8 months. I eat the same diet as before and exercise. I have gone from 104 lb to 112 lb since taking Tymlos, and I have developed significant belly fat. I cannot wear the same size around my waist and need to buy new clothes. I noticed that the manufacturer only admits that men develop a distended abdomen on Tymlos. With so many responses here about belly fat, I think it should be considered a side effect. Are people thinking that the belly fat is from injections in the area? I wouldn't want thigh fat either. I'm wondering if messing with PTH causes the weight gain? I plan to continue the medication.

I started Tymlos in June 2023 and gained about 15 pounds along with belly fat in the first few months of treatment. My doctor didn’t have an explanation but quitting wasn’t an option due to spontaneous fractures. So, I just had to adjust my mindset about my appearance. It will be interesting to see if the belly fat disappears after treatment.

I just completed my 2 year protocol on Tymlos and am hoping that the excess weight and belly fat will subside. I really only noticed the weight and belly gain the last 6 months but pants definitely are tighter and not as comfortable. Really hope to see a change.

Its interesting that no one is talking about it who has completed the medication. Its been on the market since 2017... So someone must have completed it!

I know what you mean but in the end don't think it is actually belly fat. In any case for me, it went away quickly at the end of treatment.

What do you think it is if not fat? My endo wants me to start Tymlos and reading about this side effect is discouraging.

I finished Tymlos last year. I never gained weight. I though the puffy belly was just a reaction to the injections, which I did in the belly. My tummy is not puffy anymore.

I wonder if this puffiness or fat (however we see it) happens if shots are done in thigh.

Fractures will make our tummies stick out a lot more than Tymlos does. I can attest to that personally. Every time I eat....

Finally, Tymlos works! I gained 20% in my spine and went from severe to borderline. That made a temporary tighter waistline more than worth it!
