How long to stay for gastro evaluation at Mayo Clinic?

Posted by katelynbirmingham @katelynbirmingham, Jun 20 8:52am

Hey guys. I have an evaluation appointment with the gastro department on the 8th. I was wondering how long to plan to stay? It’s just an evaluation so I’m not sure if they will want to run tests or what. I’m pretty new to all of this. I’ve seen some people say a week but that seems long just for an evaluation appointment. Any and all tips for the first appointment and gastro and how long to plan on staying would be really helpful!

Welcome to Mayo Clinic, you're asking questions many have asked and each person is different. Hopefully others who have had GI evaluation appointments can provide their experience.

How long you need to stay will depend if provider wants to do more testing. For some GI tests, there is preparation that may require you to stay extra days.

Have you created a portal sign-on. If more tests are scheduled, you will see on portal.

Would you be willing to share some additional information on your situation, might help others give you advice on appointment.

Have you had GI testing at other locations that you have shared with Mayo?
Which location are you visiting?

Thanks for your response. I have had many many gi tests but think Mayo will want to redo a few of them since it’s been a while since my last rounds of testing. I am visiting the gastro department in Rochester. I have not seen any other tests or anything listed on my portal other than my appointment and that I might need to do labs afterwards.

Having been through this recently, I found that the evaluation is an office visit, where they will determine what tests and schedule them. Here in Florida, very hard to see an actual doctor but I have a wonderful PA who scheduled everything i could possibly need.

When I first went to Mayo Clinic for gastrointestinal issues, they scheduled a series of appointments. It started with a PET scan and lab work, followed by a consultation. The next day, I had an EGD. If you're traveling, they will plan everything in advance. That was my experience.

Just want to add I just returned from a first appointment in a different practice area & next step my dr wants me to see gastrointestinal. I was super lucky to get in for August & learned how difficult it is to become a patient in gastroenterology there. What I learned is to take all steps you can prior to going to speed up the process. I had requested previous Dr reports but didn’t request films or CDROMs so dr’s staff had to call to request them. For this next gastro appt I will make sure I have everything already submitted to the dr’s team well in advance which I hope also to ensure I don’t have to do another EGD, etc. Another tip: really read their instructions on meds. She sent me to get allergy tested and I couldn’t this time because I still had antihistamine in my system.

Hi, I just returned to Rochester in April and again in June for a treatment program. I was also a patient in GI there in 2019-2020. At the initial visit/consult in April, we knew there was an issue but didn't know what was going on, so I saw the GI doctor and then they decided which tests to run, which were scheduled over the next 5 days. The plan to stay at least one week is about right if you're not aware yet of the treatment plan while there. When I was a patient in 2019/2020, the doctors at Mayo had all of my records and knew what the current issues were, what they were seeing me for, and what tests/treatments they wanted me to undergo while there, but this was during COVID and so things went a bit differently at that time. Good luck during your upcoming visit. It's a wonderful place to be treated and cared for.
