Rosacea

Posted by Kolo @kolo, Jul 20, 2016

Has anyone found a good treatment for rosacea? I get it on my cheeks and a bit on on nose. I have noticed that soy products can make it flare up, and alcohol is also a trigger. I have assumed that it has an internal cause - probably something I eat.

Hi @kolo, and welcome to Connect! You're right, certain foods/beverages can cause a rosacea flare up like hot and spicy dishes and alcohol. But it can also be caused by too much sun expose, your body over heating and stress. Here is some information from Mayo Clinic on the causes of rosacea, treatments and lifestyle remedies to reduce redness: http://mayocl.in/1Ml8V6D.

I'm tagging @marilly, @misskm @angolm, all members who discussed their experience with rosacea. @kolo, what methods do you use (if any) to reduce the flare up? And what has/has not worked for you?

Thank you Alysebrunella,
I replied several days ago, but I am new to this posting thing and probably didn't do something right. I mentioned that I have tried a New Zealand honey product which claims to be good for Rosacea but it didn't help me. Also have tried something called Red-Less 21 unsuccessfully. And a Vitamin A cream which might have helped a little bit. Most helpful has been eliminating soy and alcohol.
I am aware that one can have rosacea lasered off but that is pretty drastic and my checks don't require it.
Since rosacea probably does have an internal cause, I keep on watching to see if I can identify any other triggers. I don't think sunlight or heat are at fault, but I have my eye on stress and continue to watch what I eat.

Hi @kolo- have you consulted with a doctor regarding your Rosacea concerns? Mayo Clinic offers a guide that is helpful because it has specific questions to ask the doctor: http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/rosacea/basics/preparing-for-your-appointment/con-20014478

Writing down your concerns and tracking what causes a flare up can be helpful too, since this is information that will be helpful to the doctor is diagnosis and in talking about treatment options available. The best way to get on the track to finding a treatment that's right for you (since different things can work for different people!) is often to start with a conversation with your doctor.

I did consult with a doctor and he gave me the prescription to the Vitamin A cream as well as a printed list of potential triggers for a flare-up. When I mentioned that I had tried the honey treatment, he dismissed it as an ineffective option. He offered to do laser removal, but I opted against that before observing my skin reaction to items on the trigger list. He mentioned Red-Less 21 and I did try that, but for me the best option seems to be avoiding items on the trigger list.

It's good that you are managing the reactions by avoiding triggers. I'm sorry your doctor was dismissive of you. Finding a doctor who listens can be really important so maybe a second opinion from another doctor or specialist would be an option.

Has anyone tried doxycycline hyclate for rosacea?

I'm taking a gamble here since it doesn't look like anyone has posted here for awhile... I've had to deal with so much other LP junk I couldn't focus on my rosacea. My dermatologist diagnosed me and I keep asking to verify that's what it is but here's how mine works... Whenever I drift off to sleep, after about 10 minutes my face starts the deep red rosacea on my nose, cheeks, and chin. This happens every night!! I have been getting laser treatment every 6 weeks and use Mirvaso each day as my derm recommended to stop the red from etching permanently even more on my skin. The only other time my rosacea acts up is when I am in a heightened state of anxiety. So I can go many days without it flaring unless I happen to sleep. Which it's very hard to live without sleeping.

My face was so red from rosacea that I had to have the laser treatments. It’s been nearly 18 years and it still hasn’t come back. I stay out of the sun though.
