Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Re: walking & moving. Just finished working in the garden planting flowers and raking. I did a lot of standing, bending, and walking back and forth to the dumpster. I have on three 5% lidocaine patches today. This is the 1st time I've used three patches at one time. It's my own darn fault I hurt today because I forgot to do my PT exercise yesterday and today. But I got the garden going. Hip hip hurray! And that's a happy emotional purge.
@cb3. That’s great that you were so active today but not great that it increased your pain. Maybe just do a little less tomorrow!
Hi cb, boy does that sound like my day I just looked at my pedometer - aside from a quick trip to PT early this morning, I never left our .3 acre yard today, but I recorded 5 miles and 180 minutes of activity gardening, weeding, repotting houseplants, supervising my helper, and running up and down stairs to keep him and 2 grands fed and watered. No wonder I'm tired tonight - I think I'll sleep well after a hot shower.
Tomorrow I'll finish setting the pavers around the rehabbed pond so I can put in the 3 flats of annuals left to plant. And finish setting up all the drip irrigation- it's bound to stop raining sooner or later.
Sunday we're planning a beach day and picnic, even though I have to keep my foot out of the water -boo!
@sueinmn Fantastic! Thank you for sharing your busy "walking" day experience on the home front. And thanks for reminding me start using my my Fitbit pedometer. First I need to learn how to use it. < ughs> That means I need to read directions. < double, ughs>
Have another super, productive day.
@becsbuddy Howdy! Tomorrow I see my PT. She will help me behave. < smile>
@cb3. Be sure to tell her about this group and what goal, YOU as a member, want to set. So, how many minutes do you think that you are capable of?
Another "yard walking" day - only 8500 steps, but I finished setting up the teepee for the beans and cucumbers to climb (and the kids to play under.) Then I set a few more pavers around the pond, and began leveling the ground and setting the decorative stone. One more session ought to do the trick.
Tomorrow my Texas "bestie" is coming to play & stay - she only lives 30 miles away in summer, but we do sleepovers so nobody needs to drive after dark (or an adult beverage or two) - we'll walk, visit, eat out and have a day at the lake on Sunday with my husband and daughter for Father's day. The paddleboards, lawn chairs and grill are ready to load into the car. The county park has miles of walking trails too.
