Hormone Replacement starting at 75yrs old

Doing reach, I have decided to try HRT with testosterone, very low dose. I’m in pretty good health, but was diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rhuematica 2yrs ago. I’m Just trying to make a better life with what yrs I have left. There are so many positive messages out there, and yes I’m on the older side. I have 6 daughters and we have all been doing a lot of reading on this subject. Is there anyone else trying HRT at an older age?

Good luck with your new provider. I had seen female gynecologists, female primary providers, female endocrinologists on a regular basis for years…..ugh…no one ever mentioned HRT.

That's sad isn't it. My previous g.p. was awesome when I started having menopause symptoms we discussed it right away and she put me on it when I had a TIA at 58 she fought for me to stay on it with my cardiologist and she won. I really wish she was still my doctor

May I ask have you had breast cancer. Asking because I just had surgery and in October when I found out I had breast cancer my doctor took me off my HRT which I had been on for 10 years and it was a very low dose it was an estrogel just one pump every other day and prometrium 100 mg once a day at night since I've been off of it my energy is in the toilet I feel like my mood swing up and down I don't feel myself I'm just so frustrated and I know because I'm in the middle of breast cancer they won't let me take anything although my oncologist did prescribe vagifem which I am so thankful for

Don't you think as far as menopause goes doctors do a disservice to women there are so many things that are out there to help with symptoms do you know what my GP said to me when he took me off my HRT and I said so what am I supposed to do now and he said suffer. He no longer is my GP I actually reported him to the Ontario medical Physicians Association. That wasn't the only incident.

I had what I thought was a UTI, but it was vaginal dryness and pelvic floor disorder. I found a female uro-gynecologist who diagnosed this. Finally. She referred me for pelvic floor PT and put me on estrogen cream. This took care of the problem.

I had what I thought was a UTI, but it was vaginal dryness and pelvic floor disorder. I found a female uro-gynecologist who diagnosed this. Finally. She referred me for pelvic floor PT and put me on estrogen cream. This took care of the problem.

Yes I am going to see a pelvic floor therapist after I'm finished my cancer treatment but I'm much better since I started the vagifem. I also do itiva cranberry pac and d-mannose with a probiotic daily

Hello: my gynecologist prescribed Estrodial vaginal cream for me and even though he reassured me that it was safe to use, I was hesitant to use the cream. I checked with three other doctors and they all said the cream is safe to use.

I’ve been using the cream for three years and it has relieved the vaginal dryness I was experiencing. What a relief ! Also, I was having UTI’s every few months and since I’ve be using the cream as prescribed, I haven’t had a UTI. That makes me very happy.

Hi @rswartz. Your doctor may be hesitant to have you start HRT because nicotine can interfere with this medication.

According to an article in PubMed, from the National Institute of Health, “It has been proven that, depending on the type, duration and intensity of nicotine consumption, smoking can reduce or completely cancel the efficacy of orally administered estrogens. Not only does smoking diminish the otherwise well-established beneficial effects of estrogen on hot flashes and urogenital symptoms and its positive effects on lipid metabolism, i.e. by reducing cholesterol, but smoking also specifically reduces estrogen's ability to prevent osteoporosis.”

It sounds as though your doctor may have concerns that the medication won’t be able to work as well as intended for you. Are you having menopause symptoms?

This was at the end of the article that you sent me. I still have hope that I could still have a better quality of life.

Women who continue to smoke despite all warnings should therefore only be treated via the transdermal route. Oral contraceptives, but not HRT, are contraindicated in elderly smokers. However, the principal conclusion of the WHI study was that the lowest dose possible should be chosen, especially in patients with an increased cardiovascular risk, as is the case in smokers.

Hot flashes for over 10 yrs along with all the other systems
