Autoimmune Diseases and Fatigue

Posted by JohnWBurns @johnwburns, Jul 13, 2016

Fatigue is probably intertwined with the definition of "illness", almost any illness, but with some conditions fatigue becomes ingrained into the afflicted person's being and is a feature of their daily life. Such is the case with the highest profile disorders, cancer and cardiovascular disease, but it is just as true with at least some autoimmune diseases. I have a long history of dealing with autoimmunity and the complaint that kept bringing me back to doctors persisting in finding out what was going on was the dogged lack of energy, vitality. I got guess after guess after guess and when I got the "answer" it was basically that fatigue was part of the deal with the autoimmune disease that I have, Sjogren's, as well as I'm sure many others. So what I'm asking here is if you experience it, fatigue, how has it impacted your life and how do you deal with it? Have you found anything that you are sure mitigates it?

In my case its exercise, rest, and a fairly regulary low dose, around 50 mgs (usual recommended dose 200 mg) of modafinil, which I don't take for Sjogren's but rather for "Excessive Daytime Sleepiness" linked to Obstructive Sleep Apnea. I accidentally found out that it mitigated my general weariness. I've read some solid studies that found that American Ginseng can help cancer-related fatigue but apparently it doesn't work for Sjogren's, for me at least. Since fatigue impacts a person's total life experience in all domains, any information that might lead to dampening or controlling it would be very helpful to a lot of folks I'm sure.

Hello. I am in the middle of dealing with autoimmune issues. The most likely culprit is Sjogren's (because of high SSA & SSB antibodies). I have decided to try a supplement called "Balance of Nature" My husband swears that it has helped with his fatigue and pain and wants me to try it as well. At this point I'm willing to try just about anything. Fatigue and dry eyes/dry mouth as well as abdominal pain are my main complaints. If the Balance of Nature supplements help me I will make a point to let you know. Keep your chin up. I know it's hard sometimes. I've found that forcing myself to stay active even when I don't feel like it is much better in the long run than surrendering to inactivity. Hoping things improve for both of us.

Thank you! Please let me know if Balance of Nature supplements help you combat fatigue! Also where do you get them? I suffer with many of your symptoms also. I have PBC and fibromyalgia.

I have started taking D-Ribose with Magnesium and Malate (Again) in the afternoon. I have slept beautifully for three nights in a row. Wow!
We forget and then we remember what helped last time the fatigue got so bad. I also think I will try adding Glutathione also. It is supposed to be the mother of the Amino Acids, and a deficit can affect sleep, energy, etc.

I used D-ribose & couldn’t take very long because I’d get severe hypoglycemic attacks. Has anyone had that happen? My blood sugar & A1C are normal.

Thanks but no "belly bloat" issues and have been checked for celiac.

I have sleepiness every so often where I have to lie down and sleep or I'll fall down! It usually only lasts the one day. I have fatigue most days but I handle it by doing a little then resting a little. You can't over do it!
Be kind to yourself. The housework will still be there tomorrow so just plan your week by doing doing a little each day. If I over do it then I have rest for one or more days!

John, thankfully the worst of my autoimmune stuff did not really set in until late in life. My Fukuyama limb girdle muscular dystrophy had a brief shot at me shortly after birth, when it took the strength out of my legs and back for about 3 years. But it mostly left me alone until after age 30. Same with the RyR2. Then the Gelsolin waited until after age 60. Anyway, for most of my life I was tired for no reason. Fortunately, I forced myself to work hard and exercise hard until age 50 when my heart took a nose dive. Football was most of my life until age 50, along with running and hard labor. Bucking hay bales, construction, etc. I ran marathons and half marathons, backpacked 50 mile trails carrying 80 pound packs in wilderness areas, until age 50. But all that time I constantly fought being tired. I just refused to use that as an excuse for anything. But I was tired all the time. Now I know why. But the fatigue from the diseases that ran through my mind every day, from morning to night, just may have been the thing that saved my life.

I am new and just posted some of my story in someone else's post. My fatigue and weakness has really destroyed the life that I had, and has
created much depression. I am barely active, my mind is constantly in a fog, and can't foresee ever being able to pursue any of my passions or hobbies. I often cannot spend time with friends. I can't imagine it ever getting better but only worse and I am 50 years old. I fee like my health is fading and going downhill rapidly. So there ya go! That's how I feel... Kinda hopeless.

I am 55 and pretty much feel the same. I am tired more than 98% of the time and on those rare occasions I usually over do. I pay the price! But what do you do? I tell people my mind does not work and I can't remember, even the things I did just yesterday.

I have to push myself to do anything, and depression and weakness plays a big part for me. People say to exercise, and I get short of breath taking a shower, sweeping the floor, or washing the dishes. Not sure how I would exercise and what about the next day or so?

Extreme heat and cold are horrible for me, I hurt all over or want to pass out. I would like to live where the weather is more tolerable for my body. I also forgot to mention I have Sjogren's, Fibromyalgia, Osteoarthritis, and a few more problems.

Trying to finish up working till January 31st, 2022 so I can retire. Sure seems like a long was off sometimes.

@deannweir oh, my gosh, you sound just like me! I, too, am always tired. How do you work around it? I’m taking a break right now from my sewing—it wore me out. This week I’m trying a new drug that the neurologist gave me. We’ll see.
Maybe you’ll have to join our virtual walking group!
i tried pasting the link for you, but no luck. Will try again!

Hopefully your new medication will work for you. I don’t have much on endurance for walking, I usually run out of energy really quick and then I have days to recoup.

What about you? How did you start?

@deannweir I honestly don’t think the medicine is working. Darn, darn. I have an autoimmune disease that caused lesions on my brain. After high dose steroids, most of the lesions are gone, but they left their mark. 😥. I’m slowly tapering off the prednisone (now that I get twice yearly infusions of a chemo drug). The neurologist thinks the prednisone could be causing the fatigue. We’ll see. Tomorrow’s another day!
