Night Sweats for no reason

Posted by sprocket @sprocket, Nov 6, 2019

I am 66 years of age. For the last 10 months I have had ‘all over body’ severe drenching night sweats. I am assuming I am past menopause, and I never had night sweats during menopause. I did bring this up with my personal doctor about five months ago. She didn’t think it was anything troubling, just an annoyance. It is definitely more than just an annoyance. Changing night clothes twice a night; climbing into wet sheets (can’t change those with hubby sleeping in bed); then freezing after changing clothing; by now I’m wide awake but try to go back to sleep-hoping I’m not in for another round. Please-any thoughts?

I had night sweats out of the blue (or red) 20 years after I had a hysterectomy. My doctor put me through a round of tests for every living thing, including Carcinoid Syndrome, and nothing showed up. I take .25 mg. of Estradiol every evening and they’re gone, hallelujah. My endocrinologist says it also builds bones; I’m just happy to be able to be flash-free all day and sleep all night. 🙂

Thank you for replying! I’m glad you have found relief! I’ve decided to try and get an appointment with a hematologist/oncologist that my gyn recommended due to my medical history and hope he can run some more tests and shed some light on all of this! Quite honestly, I wish it was a hormonal thing for me, then I could possibly have a solution….

I just started having night sweats in the last 10 days. I had night sweats when i went through menopause over 10 years ago. I have no new medications. I started using a CPAP machine 3 months ago. Take Zoloft that i have been taking for over 20 years. I am back on steroid and anti inflammatory eye drops for uveitis. I taKe B12 and vitamin c daily. Any suggestions for which blood tests i should request my PCP to order?

Hi @walk4life. It will help your PCP if you make a note of your symptoms and when they started. Did your night sweats coincide with your return to the steroids and anti inflammatory eye drops?

Your doctor will ask questions about your health and about any changes in meds. They may ask if you have any other symptoms such as chills or fever, unexpected weight loss, ask about your caffeine or alcohol intake, etc.. After an exam your doctor will get a little better idea of what informative blood tests to order for you. Usually a basic CBC with differential would be a good place to start. They may also include other tests such as thyroid function test and glucose levels. I know it can be disconcerting to have night sweats but sometimes it’s nothing more than the bedroom being too hot as season’s change. Hope you get to the bottom of this. Will you let me know what you find out, please? Stay cool! 😉

I’ll be 71 this year and am experiencing daily and nightly severe hot flashes. I’ve had thyroid tests and diabetes is good, doctors don’t know what’s causing these surges. I can’t afford the medication Veozah and it’s not covered by Medicare. I am miserable!

Welcome to Mayo Connect. You are suffering the same as many postmenopausal women. It definitely has a negative impact on our quality of life, especially when interferes with sleep.

Have you discussed with your provider alternatives to Veozah due to cost. Sometimes providers want to try latest drug not realizing the cost prevents people from being able to use. Do not be afraid to tell them that it is not an option due to cost. I have had to have that discussion with a provider on alternatives for sleep medications.

The Mayo Clinic web site list some drugs that might be an alternative.

And, this page from drugs.com compares three drugs, Veozah, Venlafaxine and Gabapentin

Did your provider provide any other suggestions or alternatives?
