Night Sweats for no reason

Posted by sprocket @sprocket, Nov 6, 2019

I am 66 years of age. For the last 10 months I have had ‘all over body’ severe drenching night sweats. I am assuming I am past menopause, and I never had night sweats during menopause. I did bring this up with my personal doctor about five months ago. She didn’t think it was anything troubling, just an annoyance. It is definitely more than just an annoyance. Changing night clothes twice a night; climbing into wet sheets (can’t change those with hubby sleeping in bed); then freezing after changing clothing; by now I’m wide awake but try to go back to sleep-hoping I’m not in for another round. Please-any thoughts?

@sprocket– This must be very troubling. When I went through menopause I was in a constant state of changing clothes. However being in your mid-sixties might present another cause than menopause. I suggest that you seek another opinion from a gynecologist. There can be many reasons that you are sweating. I believe that if your body changes in any significant way (usually by symptoms that you have no history with) than something is wrong. I really hate it when a doctor says that things are just an annoyance or "probably" insignificant. To me it's a brush off.
Here is a list from Mayo about possibilities that might cause this. Mentors on Connect are not medical people so we can not diagnose.

Do you have a gynecologist? If your present doctor is one then please search for another. Does this help?

Hope all Fellow Nuero people are as well as can be:
In the last 3 months actually since the weather has actually started to get cold I started to have really really bad night sweats.
Been trying to isolate what’s doing it and of course some things are a definite trigger I found but going in on Friday to doctor and wondering what I should ask?
Food at night is now bothering me. I have lost weight don’t mind but also don’t like the circumstances.
Don’t drink but if I even have a bit to try will trigger a complete pour.
No heater on at night.
If to many covers on me will wake up completely wet.
We are talking I have to Change everything and blow dry my hair.
Very frustrating. Not going through menopause ✅ done.
No changes in medications.
Last blood showed a change of high cholesterol and something about high salt??? Need to ask about that?
I eat extremely healthy.
I still have the PN and Erb’s Palsy.😱

I saw your post and just wanted to mention thatv with my PN I go in a flair and I can feel on fire. This hotness isvall the time, also my circulation wasv screwed up from spinal surgery—-I have to have air conditioner on in bedroom night & day, winter and summer. It is only thing that helps intensity of "fire" or heat. Maybe this helps?

Hi, @cocodab – that would be frustrating indeed to wake up completely wet and have to change everything and blow dry your hair. You've provided a lot of helpful information on your circumstances and what you've looked into thus far.

I moved your post here to a discussion on night sweats so that you can talk with others who've had similar experiences and may have some input on causes and also what you might ask your doctor about at your upcoming appointment. Hoping @sprocket @merpreb from this discussion will have some thoughts.

I'd also like to invite some other members who have mentioned night sweats or have other experiences with neurologic conditions who may have some thoughts for you as you try and find answers, such as @ghennel @blakesbaby1116 @maui6698 @jenniferhunter @johnbishop.

You talked about eating food at night and also alcohol as triggers for the night sweats. Any other triggers you may have discovered, cocodab?

Thank you for moving this and any advice would be appreciated.
As I mentioned I noticed triggers to be a full stomach and even though I am cold I can’t cover myself.
Regarding alcohol I don’t drink unless you consider a s social glass of something maybe once a month. So that one time that night it triggered the sweat.
Food and covers are the hard ones and make me scared like did I overdo ???
I’m not overweight and I don’t eat negativity so hmmmm

@cocodab Are you taking any medications? I have night sweats and I am quite certain it is from a medication I am taking, an immunosuppressant. I wonder about the high salt. I will have to start noticing if I have more on days when I have eaten more salt than I generally do. I also have high cholesterol and recently started on a statin.

My blood work was different this time it showed high cholesterol and she said something about salt.
If Im sweating like that I must be losing water. Interesting

@cocodab The kind of night sweats you are describing shouldn't be so easily dismissed.

I would suggest you have a Complete Blood Count (CBC) with Differential performed.

Thanks for the suggestion of the complete blood count for the unexplained night sweats, @grecarmar. Have you also dealt with night sweats or had someone close to you experience them?

@lisalucier I had someone very close to me deal with night sweats: my mother. In her case, it was (although we didn't yet know) the first symptom of Non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

How did they test for that?

REPLY

@cocodab I hear this and always ask about recent thyroid levels check. This was what caused mine even though my levels were within normal range. I was also aware of night sweats being a sign of cancer-enough to give me night and day sweats. Turns out it was the TSH levels-one size does not always fit all.

Oh just read all above a bit slow today. Thank you so much for all the suggestions. Blood test will hopefully clear much, Friday is coming. Night sweats is knew and I have had chills and have been very cold until now.
