Does Rochester Mayo work in a multi-disciplinary way?

Posted by jml6812 @jml6812, May 19 7:20am

I have a question for those of you who've been seen/followed in Rochester Mayo's Bronchiectasis clinic.

I just finished watching Dr. King's section of the NJH conference where he talked about GERD and Bronchiectasis. I was impressed with how GI works together with pulmonary. My question is whether the GI folks at Mayo work with pulmonary in the same way.

I am scheduled to see Dr. Escalante in Pulmonary in July. My current GI doctor wants me to have a fuller evaluation to asses my reflux -- he suggested the Bravo procedure, but after listening to Dr. King I think the Ph Manometry is probably the better test. Anyhow my current doctor sent a referral to GI at Rochester Mayo and I was denied an appointment. I am wondering if I should pursue it directly with GI? Call Pulmonary and see if they'll refer to GI? or just wait till my Pulmonary appointment in July and see what can be accomplished there? Don't quite know how to proceed. I was hoping that Mayo worked like NJH.

I am a patient at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. Initially I was being treated by both Pulmonology and Infectious Diseases. When my pulmonologist was not satisfied with my progress, they had me tested (both sweat test and DNA) for cystic fibrosis. They then confirmed cystic fibrosis, and ever since then I have been treated by the entire CF team -- including a doctor, nurse, respiratory care tech, social worker, and dietician. In addition they have had me screened periodically for my bone density, and seen periodically by a GI doctor and an endocrinologist. My cystic fibrosis doctor (pulmonologist) tends to manage my overall care and refer me to any other specialists as needed. Very happy with my overall care and very grateful to the Mayo Clinic.

I am also a patient of Dr. Escalante and have found him to be thorough and treating from a multidisciplinary point of view. He has referred my to three other clinics in order to focus in on areas of concern. I think he will be open to pursuing the GI connection and is likely to know a lot about it.

@colleenyoung I'm sorry I have not stayed at or been treated at Mayo Clinc. I go to National Jewish Health for treatment outside of my local docs. I tried to get into Mayo back in 2015, but they were not taking Medicare insurance if I recall. @lindam272

I am so glad to hear that. I think my type A personality gets in the way -- just want to get it done ASAP. Since I haven't seen him as yet, I'll wait until July and work through whatever needs to be done at that time. You have certainly eased my mind. Thanks for taking the time!

Thanks so much for the information. I understood that to be the case, but was disappointed by the denial from GI. I'll wait and work through Dr. Escalante.

I am a type A personality too. I have been going to Mayo for 2.5 years now, originally for lung cancer. To maintain consistency in testing, and keeping relevant health data well-coordinated, anything related to my lung issues I do at Mayo. I now have breathing issues, so anesthesia is also an issue for me. I just call now to see a different department.

Regarding Mayo. Last year I tried making an appointment to Mayo for my bronchiectasis and MAC and they did not accept my insurance Aetna Medicare advantage pop. I was very disappointed; I could drive there instead of flying to Denver which becomes an expensive trip. I am at NJH and I am glad to be with their doctors so far.
