Whole Body Vibration for Osteoporosis

Posted by jmanj @jmanj, Jun 24, 2021

I’m looking into Whole Body Vibration to aid in bone building for osteoporosis. I’ve read that Low Intensity Vibration is better than high intensity. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I would like to add my own evidence about using a vibration platform because I wanted to avoid taking medicines. I used Marodyn Liv platform for about 14 months, and I also took during this period calcium (600-800mg), vit. D, collagen, vit.K2 and Mg. In addition I visited training center or walked about 6 km a day. Today I have done my DEXA scan. The results were following. For hip T score changed from -2 to 1.9. However, the spine T score worsened dramatically, from -1,6 to -3,0. I shall visit my doctor to find his explanations, but it appears that my most powerful weapon that I hoped for (vibration) did not work for me.

I had the same thing happen only I did intensive exercise and hrt, still a significant drop and now some new symptoms from
Hrt. My endo warned me I could not exercise, eat, or take hormones to fix this. He was correct. Wish the meds weren’t so scary.

in reply to @sallyj2,

what did you mean? Did you also used vibration platform and worsened your DEXA results?
What was the reason for which your doctor banned you the exercise?

I did not use the vibration plate. Endo meant that no amount of exercise or hormones or dietary changes would be enough. I have always exercised and my diet is very good. I’ve used supplements and progesterone for a long time, despite all this I still fractured and my dexa worsened.

@melia7 Hi, I had a similar experience. I used the Marodyne starting with the 10 min a day and working up to two 7-10 minute sessions per day. I also was doing heel drops about 5 days a week and doing what I could with food and supplements though I'm very restricted there due to food sensitivities. End result was I lost 9% density since the previous scan (16 months prior). I had the DXAs checked by Lani Simpson in case there was a mistake. Nine percent is a scary big loss though if the DXAs were only a year apart it would have been less of a loss. Lani thought the DXA's were good, meaning I was losing bone fast. For me LIV and also heel drops were not helpful.
I had not used any osteo drugs prior to this. After this I finally decided to do Evenity and I'm 7 shots in on that. I'm also doing a modified version of Belinda Beck's Liftmor weight training program for bone loss along with several other exercise methods. No vibration and no heel drops this time around. Fingers crossed. Best of luck to you!

I tried Vibration Plate therapy via the Beauty Angel machine at Planet Fitness. It exasperated my heart arrhythmia and ended in Afib. Did not work for me. Was only able to do it for about 50 days, No idea if it affected my T-score.

Hello, it was useful to hear about your experience with a vibration platform! I think that it is our duty to report our negative results about vibration in order to prevent that other OP patients choose this road. However, for more than 1 year I lived with a hope that vibration will help. May be I lost time and should start taking medicines earlier. I am interested to know if you tried to take bisphosphonates before choosing Evenity? Was it possible for you to ask your doctor the prescription for Evenity before trying bisphosphonates? Here, in Spain, one can change medicines only if after the period of 1 year with bisphosphonates, your DEXA shows no improvements or is worse. Thanks for your wishes of luck! I wish the best in your therapy road to you also!

Hi There, Yes I agree folks need to hear experiences good and bad. Right now it looks like the Marodyne does not noticeably help osteoporosis. Belinda Beck's VIBMOR study results have not been published but she has stated publicly that she was disappointed that the Marodyne device did not help bone density in that study.
I tried my darndest to get the med I thought best for me and after much struggle I got it (Evenity). In the US Medicare and private insurance companies all push biophosphonates first. I think sometimes they push Prolia also but not bone builders like Evenity. It's crazy. In the end after 5 months of pushing for what I wanted and talking with several different doctors I got approved for Evenity with Medicare and with Amgen's safety net program. I was trying to get approved with either one and finally they both approved at the same time. In my case they got a new insurance person at my "osteoporosis doctor's" office and this new person was a real go getter. She definitely helped me get approval whereas the previous one had done little. At another doctors office they also were of little help mostly saying I would have to try an anti-resorptive first. I was about to pay for Evenity myself when the two approvals came thru. It's a shame we have to struggle to get the care that would be best for us. Best of luck to you with your efforts.

I have a vibration platform and use it every day. I take no medication for osteoporosis but go to Osteostrong, which has worked for me. They have vibration plates at Osteostrong but they vibrate at a far less rate of speed than the one I have. Mine is a AXV. I’m not reading anything positive about the plates on this site and wonder if anyone out there feels they had good results using it.
Regarding your Dexa scan I’ve been told by
many doctors that you should always have the test done on the same machine. Calibrations vary from machine to machine.
Looking forward to some replies about the vibration plate. Thank you

The $119 AXV vibration plate you purchased looks unsafe for osteoporosis. Based on the product's videos and reviews, it looks like it's a rocker plate that vibrates roughly, like a paint shaker. Keep in mind that more vibration is not better. Please do be careful if you continue to use this AXV machine -- sometimes you get what you pay for.
