Medical marijuana and restless leg syndrome

Are there any credible unbiased studies available that address the short and long term affects of medical marijuana on sleep issues, including Restless Leg Syndrome? My RLS is severe. Prescription pramipexole no longer controlled my RLS. Adding THC and CBD oil in the past 2 weeks has completely eliminated my RLS for the first time in 12 years. Will it do so long term and will I experience side effects? Any research is welcomed.

Merry, I am 74 and never tried any MM at all until 2 years ago! I definitely do not ever want the 'high' or wonky effects, I don't even drink alcohol for that reason. So, if I'm using MM it's because it really works for me. And, it does.

I have anxiety, of course, lots of pain from firbo, arthritis over my body/all joints, herniated discs in lumbar/cervical/one repaired w/cement procedure at T12. add Sarcoid and pain from autoimmune illnesses, sinus infection that's leading to surgery and is presently causing serious headaches and other pain, etc. So, I've tried a bunch of stuff.

By using the 1:1, CBD/THC tincture, 1 dropper at night....250mg each, about an hour before bed, with some CBD 800mg cream as needed on my hands/wrists/etc, and Robaxin 750mg 3x daily, I no longer take Lyrica, Oxycodone, Gabapantin, 800 mg Ibuprophen 4x daily, etc. I'm only using Robaxin, occasionally Voltaren cream, CBD cream, Frankincense and Myrrh balm, and MM tincture. It seems to be a good combination for me at this moment. It also gets tweaked a lot as needed. If I'm more active, or have a new infection which happens very often as my immune system is quite messed up...I've learned, thankfully, and with a lot of help from the Connect folks, that using these different products and methods at different times, seems to work.

So, let me urge you to reconsider, if you still need some help. I've changed my thinking so much now and am thrilled with the results. I'm off 'hard-core' prescription drugs, it seems to me to be a good direction for me.

Elizabeth- This is so good to hear that the relief that you have sought has found you! I should try some THC in my CBD oil but I'm leary of its effects on my anxiety. I'm going to look at some of the creams that you use for my husband! And for my knee.

Need to add one thing to the message just sent to you....I am now taking Requip, ropinirole, as you mentioned. I take 2 tablets an hour before bed.

Wow, what a huge help this is! I am almost able to keep my legs still much of the night. No longer have the pain, movements, irritable feelings in my legs. It's for me a wonder drug.

I also found after the second day taking Requip, I walk more easily, can lift my legs better, they don't feel like tree trunks and 1000pounds heavy, feet lift and don't walk as stiffly as before. It helps the dopamine in my brain in some way that indicates I may have some Parkinsonism according to neurology. I don't care, but I'm thrilled. It also helps reduce tremors, and fogginess.

What a change in my life from just this one drug. I'm so thankful. Add that the the help from the other areas, I consider myself so blessed. Hope you get the good results as well, Merry.

Note: using tincture, measured dropper at night, in equal combination, getting no high at all...just pain/anxiety/sleep, etc relief, is what I'm after and this combo in this form does wonders for me. I don't smoke MM. Perhaps there's better control? Don't know, but it works well And, I think it best for most of us to avoid putting some foreign smke,etc in our lungs. I can't, as I have Vasculitis and the lungs are vulnerable. So, tincture.
Merry, have you spoken w/Chris,@artscaping about her thoughts? I think she might add some insight as she has done a lot of research and found a good route for her pain control.

I sleep beautifully most nights so that isn't my problem. I do plan on talking to Chris about several things in the next few days. SHe's a good friend. Thank you.

To all who have replied to my original post, thank you. I've not yet read all articles, but I've come to this conclusion. Long term use of MM is not safe, and can cause reduced cognitive skills, and more importantly for me, loss of memory. I took a neuropsych test last week, and am waiting for the results, but I do know, compared to the same test 2 years ago, that my cognitive skills and memory have declined. So my use of MM to help my RLS and sleep apnea must be temporary, long enough to gradually lower or eliminate my pramipexole intake (a dopamine agonist), so that, when needed again, the dosage is minimal. Thanks again to all your comments. They have helped to relieve my frustration over controlling the severity of my RLS.

I have had varying degrees of RLS for more than 40 years and what I have learned is that SUGAR is a big contributor to my problems. Inactivity is to a lesser degree a contributor. Any amount of SUGAR can give me a problem, not only at night but during the day, too. Whether in the cup of coffee, tea, processed foods in containers in the stores, if sugar is in it, it bothers my RLS. I'm not talking about fruit - I eat lots of different kinds fruit most days. Cutting out processed SUGAR completely gives me relief. Adding exercise also gives me, to a lesser degree, relief. I don't take any medications or MM. Don't even know if you're still monitoring this list. But if you are, hope this helps.

I have this and the "root cause" seems to be lower back for me. I do cat/cow/child/cobra yoga, clamshell stretches, leg edema massage, pumping of feet and hamstring stretches - on the bed, before sleep. I do THC/CBD tincture under my tongue. I mix my own and try to buy the indica strain. The CBD tincture I buy is 600mg and the THC is 600. Roughly 2:1 of CBD/THC, about an hour before bed. I have a sleep disturbance going on also, and Percoset helps with that. Scar tissue in my knee is contributory; so a good brand cbd ointment (I use Happy Salve), or lidocaine patch there. I think the THC helps the activation of cbd and, you can experiment to see what works; keep adding a little more. For breakthrough, I take 1/2 THC/CBD gummy an hour or so later, as well as cold/heat and magnesium. Leafly is a good website. It is a misery, for sure but at least I am mostly sleeping well. Sleep doctor appointment in November.

I’m a male , 71 years old and I’ve dealt with this since I was a kid. I could be the poster child for RLS. The only time I remember not having problems is when I was smoking a lot of pot. Currently I am taking Ropinirole er 6 mil tablets. Clonazepam and 10 mil methadone and I still cannot go to sleep without a battle at night. It’s really getting to me as two of the meds have depression as side effects and then the sleep situation causes depression as well. I haven’t smoked pit for a long time but I am desperate. Any help would be appreciated. I mean I kick walls when it starts acting up in my feet and arms as well. Like I said ….i could be the poster boy for RLS. Doctors love me because they’re pill pushers. I need help.
